It has been about a month since my last post. I have been real busy with work and getting ready for the Midwest Toy Soldier Show. I wanted to make a quick post about some new figures and also an update on my figures.

Alexey has been busy revamping his company. I received a bunch of figures from him this week. He started working with some new sculptors and here is some of the results.

Publius is working on a Iroquois Indian set. The prototypes look great. I just got a bunch of Publius figures that I will review in a couple of weeks.

In my last post we talked about the limited set of Anglo Saxons miniatures that I am having produced. I received some of the sets this week. Here are some pictures of the final figure cast. Hopefully I will be able to put some sets together for the show. I need more of the 8th figure to complete more sets. Some of these figures are cast without a shield or hand with a spear. This was done for two reasons. The first was to get a nicer cast figure. The second reason was to avoid a spaghetti type spear being cast. After some tests the spearmen will be cast in two different resins. The figure will be cast in a rubbery type resin and the hand with the spear will be cast in a harder resin to avoid the bending of the spear. My vision of this set was to have a Saxon Spear Wall. To avoid any of the spears getting broken during shipping, I am thinking of leaving them unattached from the figure. The collector can use crazy glue to attach the shield and hand with the spear.

Saxons Danes1Saxons Danes2Saxons Danes3Saxons Danes4Saxons Danes5Saxons Danes6Saxons Danes7Saxons Danes8Saxons Danes9

Today I was going through the figures and trimming any flash that I found. I set some of them up to fight a small battle with some Prikaz Danes. I mixed in a few Publius Saxons (blue guys) too.

Playmobil Gauls

The other day I stumbled across these vintage Playmobil Gauls. They are sets 7923 & 7924. They are hard to find and usually are expensive if you do find them. I got lucky to get both of these sets for $20.00.

I wish Playmobil had expanded on this theme. Most Playmobil collectors had to make their own Gauls to fight against the Romans. These figures will be joining Hannibal’s Army…

Don’t forget about the Midwest Toy Soldier Show. It will start in about 25 days. It is one of the best shows around. Plenty of plastic and metal figures. I will be there selling my new miniatures, toys from my own collection, and LOD & Barzso products.

The Latest News!! Anglo-Saxons by Warhorse Miniatures!! Updates on Prikaz, LOD~Barzso, Petite Guerre & Midwest Toy Soldier Show.

Tusken Raiders

While most of you were getting ready to watch the Super Bowl, I was putting together this post. Today we have some updates. The first update will be about Prikaz Toy Soldiers.

Prikaz Logo

Prikaz Toy Soldiers, “ПРИКАЗ” in Russian means “Order” in English. They make resin based miniatures. The owner is Alex Pisarev. I started collecting his medieval sets from the beginning. I have been working with Alex on some projects after we first met. I have been updating the picture catalog of his sets on my website. You can check out that page over here Prikaz Toy Soldiers. Alex is in the process of expanding his business. I should have more information about this in the coming months.

The Rifleman

Last month I received most of the Prikaz Streltsy sets. Today I want to take a closer look at the first and last set that was made from that theme of the Russian riflemen.

The Rifleman2

St-1) Moscow Streltsy #1 – A set of five figures firing standing Streltsy with muskets and swords – $30.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This one figure started it all for Alexey. So when you look at his company this is a key figure to have. The figure is nicely detailed and depicts a Russian rifleman from the 16th to 18th century.

Streltsy regiment of artillery20

St-8) Streltsy regiment of artillery (1 cannon, 8 artillerists) – $100.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Here is the latest set from the Streltsy theme. This Artillery set is really nice. It comes with a huge crew to show off different scenarios of moving, loading and firing. There are also some accessories too.

LOD Barzso

“We are able to start taking pre-orders on four Barzso resin figure sets. The figures have been arriving at LOD headquarters and we will be packaging them up over the next two weeks. The initial four figure sets are all in blue.

They have been loaded into the web store so feel free to take a look. We will be adding more photos of each figure as well. The pirate sets and the Lewis & Clark character figure set are priced at $25 per bag. The Last of the Mohicans character set is limited and available for $75 per set.” ~ Ken Ciak of LOD Enterprises Toy Soldiers.

Here are some pictures of some Barzso figures that I purchased last year. I was told by Ken that the new sets are cast in the same blue color. You can visit the LOD website over here https://lodtoysoldiers.com/.

Next month I will be attending the Midwest Toy Soldier Show. This is one of my favorite shows to attend now. The dealers usually have a great selection of plastic figures from many different companies from all over the world. Besides the plastic figures there are many painted metal miniatures too. This year a new company will be premiering at the show. Which leads me to the next article in this post…

For about the last five years I started thinking about having my own line of Toy Soldiers made. With the help of Alexey Pisarev my dream has come true. Here are some test shots of the miniatures below.

Saxon Fryd with hand axe, Huscarl with Dane axe, Noble with Sword & Fryd with hand axe.

Test Shots9

The last Saxon fyrd sculpt with a spear was just finished.

Test Shots1

3 Saxon Fyrd with Spears.

Next month at the Midwest Toy Soldier Show I will be starting to sell my own line of Toy Soldiers. I am offering a limited run of 50 sets. Each set will have 8 different resin figures. The set depicts Anglo-Saxon warriors. They can be used to fight your battles that took place during the Dark Ages. They were made to be lined together to fight in a shield wall formation.

Test Shot

Most of these warriors are from the Saxon militia or Fyrd. The Fyrd were freemen that would be raised to defend their homes when they were threatened. Most of these men would fight with spears or hand axes. They were usually lightly armored. If they had a helmet they were lucky. Later on the Fyrd would be better organized and better armored.

Test Shots3

Here is a Saxon Noble and Saxon Huscarl.

Test Shots4

Here are two Saxon Fyrd with hand axes.

Test Shots5Test Shots6Test Shots7

Here are three of the Fyrd with spears. The fourth figure was just finished. I will have more pictures in the future.

Test Shots8

On some of the figures the shields are attached. If you have two sets you can have the same figure look a little different by using a different shield. The color will be a burnt Orange.

The past few years Publius has released a set of figures early in the year. This year they have a new set of Scandinavians. As usual they are really nicely detailed. I like the poses this year. One figure looks like Santa Claus. The female warrior could be one of his elves.. I hope to have some of these figures when they become available. These figures should be on eBay in the near future.

Here are some pictures of sculpts that were sent to me by Plastic Platoon. They are Plains Indians from the Tribes of the Sioux & Cheyenne. I guess these will be available sometime before the end of the summer or early fall. The details are excellent. These figures are more like a set of Character figures than a regular set. I wish that some of the poses were crouching or running as they would have been at the Little Big Horn. Maybe we will see some figure sets of hand to hand fighting. Or even some mounted figures would be even better.

Here is another figure that is being made for the Conte Romans sets. The details are also excellent. I can’t until these available.

These plastic figures are really nice. I like the choice of poses and use of other medieval weapons the we usually never see. The figures say 1/32 but they are closer to 1/30. They are a little bigger than the Conte medieval figures. But still look really nice with them. They fit very well with the Prikaz & Engineer Basevich figures. If I see the blueish gray color figures I will pick them up one day. I think I will paint a set of these one day if I get another set of the brown ones. I think we will see some Arab warriors one day to fight our Crusaders. I would like to see them do a Teutonic set and some Baltic Pagans to fight. That would some great sets to see.

We will start off this post with some news about Prikaz. They just released a new set of Strelet’s artillery. I will have a preview of this set in about a month from now. But until then here are a few more pictures of the set. For more information about Prikaz Toy Soldiers check out this link, Prikaz Toy Soldiers.

prikaz-toy-soldiers2

But that is not the only news that I have about Prikaz. Next month they will be releasing two more sets. The first is called “Princely Court 4: Hunters”. It includes 6 figures. Elder, Slav with a child, a worker with a bag, a hunter-archer, a hunter with a knife, a bear.

Prikaz Shields4

The second set is called “Konung 2: Wall of Shields”. This is a set of Vikings. Alexey says. “Three vikings in a fighting stance and three vikings in a squat. Shields are removable. I emphasize that we tried to make just the Vikings – for the whole team only one helmet and only two swords, the most respected and successful. The rest have shields and axes. No armor. Only leather and cloth jackets, only hardcore)))”

Here is a picture of me cleaning up this week. In about a weeks time I picked up 4 different playsets for under S250. I wasn’t even looking for them, they found me. Well sort of, lol.

AuburnAuburn5Auburn1

At a local flea market I picked up this Auburn playset for S50. I never saw a boxed set from Auburn before. I think this set is from the 1950’s. The box is a good condition with some damage. Most of the figures are in really good condition. Some of the pioneer’s rifles are cut. The stage coach driver is a Rel figure. I added a horse that I got last month from Gettysburg to the set. That horse needs a bath, lol.

RC1Rangers Cabin1Rangers Camp1Rangers Rescue1

Here is a Barzso Playsets “Ranger Camp” playset. I picked this set up for $95. I didn’t have too much interest in this set years ago. I thought it was another Ranger figure add-on set. But I was wrong. It has a lot of things inside the small box. There are three different displays that you can set up with this set.

The first is using the burnt out cabin. It is the center piece of the set. You can set up the Rangers fighting off the French & Indians.

The second scene is the Ranger Camp. Some really nice poses in camp setting. There are a few tents and a half faced camp.

The last scene is the Rangers rescuing a captive from the Indians.

Rangers1

Here are some pictures of the Rogers’ Rangers. They are cast in a nice shade of green.

French1

Here are some of the French Infantry figures cast in a Cream color. They were cast in this color when they first came out. Most of the French figures that I have are cast in gray.

Indians1

There were a few Indians in this set. The Huron Indians were cast in a chocolate brown.

The Rangers had an Iroquois Indian Scout with them. He is cast in a tan color.

The burnt out cabin.

The half faced camp.

The split railed fence.

Tents1

The set has a bunch of little accessories too.

I will get to Gettysburg on Saturday and stay at the Eisenhower Hotel. I am going to visit the different shops that are around Lincoln Square, then down Baltimore Street. My favorite street to shop is on Steinwehr Ave. They have a few shops that sell toy soldiers and one that only sells toy soldiers. After shopping I will visit the Historic 1776 Dobbin House Tavern to get something to eat. There are a bunch of other places to visit through the town and surrounding area. To enjoy the battlefield you should spend a few days to study it. If you only have a day or two then visit the park center. You can read more in the links below about the town and battlefield.

An Interview with Gene Abravaya of Paragon Scenics & Miniatures.

Paragon

One of my favorite themes to collect is from the Great Plains Indians Wars period. When collecting figures for this theme Paragon is one of the first companies that come to mind first. If not, it should be. You can visit their website by clicking on this link here Paragon.

I first learned about Paragon Scenics & Miniatures in 2012. They produce Western themed sets in plastic. Their miniatures fit into three themes; The Alamo, American Civil War and The Great Plains Indian Wars. Besides the miniatures they also sell foam terrain pieces, buildings and Forts. They also have produced a few playsets. Their Native Americans figures are considered some of the best ever made in plastic.

Display1

I have wanted to do an interview with Gene since I started doing them. But we couldn’t set some thing up until now. With the help of Ed Borris I was able to put this together. Thanks Ed : )

Ed Borris

An Ed Borris figure by Jason Pope fighting off two Paragon Native Sioux Warriors.

Today we get a chance to talk to Gene Abravaya the owner of Paragon Scenics & Miniatures. Hi Gene. Thank you in advance for taking your time to answer some of these questions.

Box Art2

Box Art from one of Paragon’s sets.

Warhorse Miniatures: Can you tell us about yourself and how did Paragon get started?

Gene: First of all, thank you Mike for giving me this opportunity to reach out to other collectors. This labor of love started a long, long time ago for me when, back in 1959 or so, I received my first Marx Fort Apache playset. I admit that, during my teenage and college years, when I was more concerned about dating and pleasing girlfriends, I was absent from the hobby. After that, pursuing a career and then raising a family took me further away. But always the love of toy soldiers lingered. It wasn’t until my own children gave me a set of Lord of The Rings figures that the desire to collect was reawakened. And shortly after that, the desire to create my own line of figures took hold of me. I have always been a creative person, a lover of all the arts and an over-achiever – the type of person who has always looked to challenge himself. If I was going to make my own line of figures, I was going to make them myself. Something in me kept saying ,”you can do this.” So I did.

Figure1

(Gene continues) After checking out the leading manufacturers of new figure sets – Conte and TSSD in particular, I realized how far the industry had come. The work they did and continue to do in advancing the quality of product has to be recognized for its genius and respected its love for the hobby. They were my inspiration and still are. I contacted Nick VerSteeg, who not only unselfishly gave me the benefit of all his insight but gave me the names of the people I needed to contact if I was serious about getting into “the business.” That’s how it started, and after producing sixteen different sets and close to thirty foam diorama pieces, I am still at it.

Paragon Wilson’s Creek Banks

Warhorse Miniatures: Your Native American figures are some of the best sculpted miniatures ever made. Who is the sculptor and can you tell us any background in the development with these figures?

Gene: Whether or not other collectors are a fan of my figures, I can honestly say they are the product of my own creation. I personally sculpt each figure of each set. The process has taught me patience if nothing else.

Medium Eastcoast View 1

Warhorse Miniatures: Your latest set is the Alamo Mexican Set 3. They look very nice. I like the new pattern of mixing some mounted figures with figures on foot. Will you continue this practice?

Gene: Most of our sets are six figures. Recently, because of rising costs, I have released new sets with four poses but, in many cases, these sets have swivel and swappable heads, giving collectors options that they don’t have when buying other manufacturers’ sets with six or more poses with fused features.

Paragon Mexicans Set3

Paragon Mexicans Set3bParagon Mexicans Set3a

Warhorse Miniatures: It seems that you are very fond of the American West or American Civil War History. Have you ever thought about producing another theme?

Gene: Taking a serious look at what had already been produced and what needed to be produced, it seemed like there was an opportunity to make my own presence known to the collecting community by beginning with a line of figures that, growing up, I had always wanted for myself. I have always loved John Ford’s Cavalry trilogy – Fort Apache, Rio Grande, and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. At that time no one had done the Apache Wars of the Southwest, circa 1870’s, so it seemed like the perfect time to do it. We now do three Apache warrior sets, four US Cavalry sets and one set of Cavalry and Apache Scouts.

Paragon Fort Apache

(Gene Continues) From there we have produced two sets of Civil War figures, Sioux warriors and, another personal favorite, The Alamo. The very next set I received as a boy after my Marx Fort Apache was, you guessed it, Disney’s Davy Crockett Alamo playset. I still remember watching the Davy Crockett series on TV. It was the first time, I believe, a main character of any TV series, died at the end, and if you didn’t exactly see him Fess Parker die (I think the final scene Davy is swinging his rifle at the top of the stairs, the camera pans up as he is surrounded by Mexican soldiers from all sides), it was definitely implied. Nevertheless, to a youngster it was riveting and The Alamo, became not just a monument and a memorial to the nation but something epic in scale in my imagination. I’m very proud of my Alamo sets. What they lack in authenticity, they make up for in drama and versatility. The Mexicans are very reminiscent of Disney’s original designs (minus the backpacks) and the defenders are not just buckskin-clad Tennesseans but from all walks including Tejano.

Warhorse Miniatures: There was some talk on one of the forums about you retiring at the end of this year? What are your plans?

Gene: That brings us to the present and the future of Paragon Scenics and Miniatures. I am currently working on a whole array of foam scenic pieces, twenty or more to be specific, intended for five new playsets that are in development. Two will be 7th Cavalry in concept – Paragon’s version of Custer Hill and the defensive position by Reno and Benteen’s men on the bluffs above.

(Gene Continues) Two will be what I call The Antietam Series – The Bloody Road and the taking of Burnside’s Bridge.

(Gene Continues) The fifth and last of the new playsets will be an expanded version of what we began with – The Final battle in John Ford’s Fort Apache. I believe the design and detail in these new pieces will be unsurpassed by anything plastic collectors have seen in the past, and I hope they delight and spark not only those collectors’ imaginations but their children’s and their grandchildren’s.

Warhorse Miniatures: Thank you again Gene. Is there anything else that you would like to say to the readers?

Gene: What does the future hold? My answer to that is “who knows”. I have always been driven by inspiration and by my wife’s love and patience. Currently, I have sacrificed a den, a guest room and 90% of my garage to this business. How much more I can sacrifice depends on my health, my wife’s love and her patience. Happy collecting to all!

Well that is some exciting news about all the future sets and terrain pieces. I can not wait until the Plains Indian theme sets show up.

Paragon makes some really nice foam pieces. You should try to get them while they are still available.

Their figures blend very well with other companies like these Barzso Buffalo. They also look great with the TSSD Native American sets. Speaking of TSSD, the new owners have a new website over here at https://micshaunscloset.com/.

Paragon also has painted sets available for sale. Check them at over at http://www.paragon-scenics.com/miniatures/Painted_Figures.html.

Today we head back to Russia for a review of the newest set by Prikav. Most of the sets he sells are between $30 to $38 dollars. There is a conversion fee also. If you are interested in this set or any of the other Prikav sets you can contact Alex Pisarev of Prikav at his email address which is pisarevalexey1979@gmail.com. I have ordered a bunch of sets from him the past month. Send him a message and he will get back to you.

Now back to the review. The name of this set is “Squad”or Slavic Noble Warriors. These are professional veteran warriors. This set includes 4 figures. One is mounted. One of the warriors is female. I am very pleased to own this set. I purchased two of them. One of the sets I will paint. The size of these figures are about 1/32 in scale.

The second figure is wearing chain mail. He holding a round shield and is about to thrust a sword forward. Both the first and second figure can be used in a shield wall formation.

The third figure is the Female warrior. She is rushing forward banishing a sword and axe. She is protected by chain mail.
