During World War II, the Don Cossacks mustered the largest single concentration of Cossacks within the German Army, the XVth SS Cossack Cavalry Corps. A great part of the Cossacks were former Russian citizens who elected to fight not so much for Germany as against the Soviet Union. The XVth SS Cossack Cavalry Corps included the 1st Cossack Division and the 2nd Cossack Division.
Mars just released a set of Don Cossack soldiers that served in the German Army during World War II. I recently picked up a set from Kent Sprecher. Here is the link for Kent on eBay, 32023 Mars 1/32 WWII Don Cossacks (German Allies) toy soldiers 15 in 8 poses. You get 15 figures in 8 different poses in 1/32 scale.
Let’s start the review. I was very happy to get this set. Mars hit a home run in my opinion. I was surprised to find out that the scale of this set about the same scale as the Conte Germans. Now my German forces finally have some Axis Allies in the same scale. They also look nice when compared to Marx Germans too. Even the Plastic Platoon figures are about the same scale. The only flaw that stands out to me is the flash that cuts down most of the figures faces.
The scale is one of the major drawbacks to most of the other Mars sets. Previous Mars World War II sets really didn’t compare that well with most sets. Unless you were a big collector of MPC figures then you were out of luck. Most collectors will pick a scale that they like to collect. You have 1/35 scale which is what most “Models” are. Then the classic scale of 54mm or the original 1/32 scale which most Marx figures are. Then the “Big” 1/32 scale which came along with Conte & TSSD figures. My favorite is the Conte Scale.
As I was writing my review a few days ago I was sent some pictures of the new Mars WW II German Elite Infantry in Winter Dress. These figures look really nice. I hope that these new figures are also a little bigger than the previous sets. Kent should have them in stock in a few weeks.

Amazons are in the Midwest and arriving at LOD headquarters tomorrow. Figure sets will be on the website on Thursday (9/19) and available at the Chicago Toy Soldier Show the same day.
New foam Santa’s Workshop will also be available at the Show and online now.
We look forward to seeing friends and collectors next week in Schaumburg.
Here are the New Amazons.
Santa’s Workshop can be the centerpiece of your Christmas display. This finely crafted foam piece is the hub where the elves are hard at work building the toys that Santa delivers every year to good boys and girls.
The Workshop will be available on its own ($125 plus shipping) or as part of an LOD display set ($160 plus shipping).
The display set includes the following – Santa’s Workshop, Santa’s Christmas Delivery figure set, a bag of decorative snow, five assorted sisal trees, and eight LOD gifts in four colors (blue and pink shown).
This set will be on the website this weekend and available for pre-order. I will also have them at the Chicago Toy Soldier Show.
Merry (early) Christmas from LOD 😊
Ron Barzso will be at the show too. He will be in Room # 5104 this year. Even though he is retired he still has some products to sell. He even has a couple things to surprise us sometimes too!!
That concludes any information that I have about the show from the vendors. I should have another post up next weekend about the show itself. I will update this article if I have anything new to add. I hope to attend next year.
I was just going to do this post about the show. But I was informed about some more new sets coming from Russia.
Here is Publius latest set, Ancient Scythians. They are 1/32 in scale. Another 8 figure set. Well sculpted as usual. They are up for sale on eBay now.
MAN is the company that came out with the set of Tlingit Natives earlier this year.
Man-made monument to HUMANITY
Workshop on the creation of plastic men.
Project goals: through contemplation of the “little men” through the game, to convey as much as possible the originality and colorfulness of historical cultures and ethnic groups born in the process of forming a single human race.
They now are releasing two new sets about the natives of Aria or Ancient Aryans. You can read more about Aria here, https://www.ancient.eu/aria/. Also you can read about the Ancient Aryans here, https://www.ancient.eu/Aryan/. Check out the video below to see all the figures.

These sets are 1/32 in scale. I will try to find out more information on when they will be available and what the cost of these sets will be.
The toy soldier show in Chicago is around the corner now. I bet there will some new products & news. Plus some surprises!! We will have to wait for now. But until then I have some news to share from Russia. The first is from Engineer Basevich. They have two news sets in 1/32 scale that they are releasing.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The first one is Set #28 “First cavalry army. Civil War in Russia 1918-21”
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
The second is Set # 29 “Red commanders. Civil war in Russia 1918-21″
These sets will be cast in different colors. The details are really nice. Here are some more pictures below.

Next we have some preview of 5 different sets that are from another Russian company called Biplant. The new historical based figure sets appear to be new and not copies of other brands. The historical figure sets are about 60mm to 65mm in size. The Fantasy set are recasts from a company called Oritet. I am not too sure about the scale of the fantasy figures.
Here are the two fantasy Amazon based figure sets. The first is a set of dragon figures. They are fantasy female warriors. The second is of a dragon and another female warrior.
Here are the Gauls. They look good. Some could be used as Saxons or Vikings by trimming the helmets and hand axe.
Here are the Romans. I think a few look more like Greeks.
The last set is of Dark Age Rus warriors. They are really nice. I think the price tag on all of these sets is around $10. Not bad at all. I will get a couple sets of the Rus & Gauls for a review in the near future. They should be found on eBay somewhere soon.
That is it for now. I should have another post up this Sunday. Thank you for reading.
Here is a quick recap of what has been happening this week. Plus a review of Chintoys sets 017 & 018.
Here are some pictures of sculpts that were sent to me by Plastic Platoon. They are Plains Indians from the Tribes of the Sioux & Cheyenne. I guess these will be available sometime before the end of the summer or early fall. The details are excellent. These figures are more like a set of Character figures than a regular set. I wish that some of the poses were crouching or running as they would have been at the Little Big Horn. Maybe we will see some figure sets of hand to hand fighting. Or even some mounted figures would be even better.
Here is another figure that is being made for the Conte Romans sets. The details are also excellent. I can’t until these available.
Lion King with alternate arms. Here we have freed him from his ‘flag’ and are turning him loose for hand to hand combat. ; (also have a 3rd left arm holding round shield)
Mars sent me some pictures of the way the box will look for their upcoming set of WWII German Panzergrenadiers.
Here are some pictures of the new sets that have just been released or will be released this month by Prikaz. They are about 56mm or the big 1/32 scale. I will update the catalog page with prices and more pictures soon Prikaz Toy Soldiers
Here are the 6 figures in the Viking Shieldwall set. Three figures with shields standing and three figures with shields kneeling. This set sells for $37.00.
Here are some pictures of the figures from the new “Hunters” set. This set goes for $37.00
Some more pictures of the new Artillery Set. This set has 8 figures and a cannon. This set goes for $100.00.
I ordered the two new sets from Chintoys last week. These sets come in various colors from blue, blue-gray, red and brown. Maybe even more colors? I ordered the the sets in blue. You can find these sets on eBay right now.
Here are the Chintoys Knights Templar CHT017 & Knights Hospitaller CHT018. Here are some more pictures below of the Knights with figures from other brands of Prikaz, Conte & Engineer Basevich to compare them too.
These plastic figures are really nice. I like the choice of poses and use of other medieval weapons the we usually never see. The figures say 1/32 but they are closer to 1/30. They are a little bigger than the Conte medieval figures. But still look really nice with them. They fit very well with the Prikaz & Engineer Basevich figures. If I see the blueish gray color figures I will pick them up one day. I think I will paint a set of these one day if I get another set of the brown ones. I think we will see some Arab warriors one day to fight our Crusaders. I would like to see them do a Teutonic set and some Baltic Pagans to fight. That would some great sets to see.
Today we head back to Russia for a review of the newest set by Prikav. Most of the sets he sells are between $30 to $38 dollars. There is a conversion fee also. If you are interested in this set or any of the other Prikav sets you can contact Alex Pisarev of Prikav at his email address which is pisarevalexey1979@gmail.com. I have ordered a bunch of sets from him the past month. Send him a message and he will get back to you.
Now back to the review. The name of this set is “Squad”or Slavic Noble Warriors. These are professional veteran warriors. This set includes 4 figures. One is mounted. One of the warriors is female. I am very pleased to own this set. I purchased two of them. One of the sets I will paint. The size of these figures are about 1/32 in scale.
Here is the first warrior. It looks like he is wearing Lamellar armour of leather over some chain mail. He swinging a sword and holds a Kite shield.
The second figure is wearing chain mail. He holding a round shield and is about to thrust a sword forward. Both the first and second figure can be used in a shield wall formation.
The third figure is the Female warrior. She is rushing forward banishing a sword and axe. She is protected by chain mail.
The last figure is of a Mounted Warrior. I would say he is the leader of this small warband. He is wearing an ornate helmet and protected Lamellar leather armor over chain mail. He has a sword and a Kite shield. He looks like he is charging forward into battle.
Here are some pictures of the rider by himself. These figure is nicely sculpted.
The horse is beautifully detailed. I like the pose. The action of the horse pulling his head and the direction of his tail. The figure fits really nicely on top of the horse. No tilting over.
Here are some pictures of the figures compared to some Conte Vikings.
Here are some more pictures of the Prikav warriors with Conte vikings.
Here are some more pictures of the prototypes of an Artillery set the Prikaz is working on.
Now we head over to some news. If for some reason you have not heard about the Midwest Toy Soldier show it is about 2 weeks away.
Last year was the first time that I went. I made the trip into a mini vacation. It was a great show. I am glad that I made the trip. They had a ton of Barzso figures. They also had a ton of BARZSO figures. Did I say that Ron Barzso was attending this show, lol.
This show has a lot of quality dealers. From Ron Barzso to John Stengel Jr. There is a lot of plastic and there is also metal figures. The show is a nice size. You are able to take your time and browse the tables with out the feeling that you have to rush because there is a crowd pushing you through. I had a lot of fun just talking to collectors and dealers.
The show is on Sunday April 7th. On Friday April 5th & Saturday April 6th they have room trading in the hotel that the show is at. I never did any room trading. But this year I will. If you want to read more about last years show check out the review I did over here Midwest Toy Soldier Show 2018 Review. Check out the Midwest Toy Soldier Show website for dealer information and other show information.
Here is some news from Conte. I got an email the other day about some of his plans for some plastic figures. Here is what he said below. I hope to see these by the end of the year. Conte Collectibles
ATTENTION PLASTIC COLLECTORS
At long last, some plastic news. Plastic Romans are becoming a reality. These are photos (received today) of the first Roman figure prototype rendered at the factory. We are very pleased that minimal changes of our original sculpt have been made—meaning that our vision of how we want our Romans to look can be realized in plastic. We had worried that the ‘cheek guards’ on the helmet might have been compromised/changed due to molding issues or that the weight of the shield might be a problem but things are looking good. Work at the factory is proceeding on a marching figure, an archer, a massed formation figure and 8 attacking poses. (that’s 12 if you are counting ). The factory has in their hands an additional 4 poses which have not entered the mold making process yet. 4 Casualty poses & 4 additional fighting sculpts are being finalized here in the USA. We plan to send these to the factory as soon as they are finished. The Barbarian Horde is also being readied; as soon as we know ‘things are good’ with the first 8 or so Romans, we will be sending Barbarians….
If you guys support the range, we also have catapults, ballista, siege tower and battering ram sculpted and ready ….Thanks as always for your patience and support for our Labor of Love.
Hail Einar Maximus RC
If you need some Romans right now you can head over to MicShaun’s Closet today!!!!
David Cook tells me that they keep re-stocking items.
Yes our restock is ordered on all of our missing figure sets and should be here sometime in late June. We still have a large foam order in production and it should be here in the next 2 weeks. Lastly we are placing our 4th large foam order this week. Thanks for this Mike your post reaches a lot of people!!!
Go over and check out all the new products that MicShaun’s Closet is selling. I just noticed today all the new foam products they now have. Besides the TSSD products they also sell LOD, BMC, Paragon, Austin Miniatures, Atherton Scenics & more.
Last but not least is the Mars Pirates in 1/32 scale that are now available for sale. Kent Sprecher is selling these on eBay right now. Go to his page to check them out 32016 Mars Caribbean Pirates toy soldiers 15 in 8 poses. These should go well with the Barzso Pirates.
Greetings everyone. A few weeks ago I received in the mail a package of mainly Airfix figures. I paid $20 for the lot. They had advertised Vintage plastic toy soldiers, Germans, British and others on eBay. They are mostly World War II plastic figures. When I looked at the pictures I noticed that the Germans where mostly Airfix Italian Infantry. These figures are 1/32 in scale.
I went through the box and divided the figures into about 10 different groups.
Most of the figures were Airfix but some where from other brands.
Timpo & Airfix 8th Army figures.
One of the bigger groups was of Airfix British 8th Army.
The next group was of Airfix Afrika Korp figures.
The next group was Airfix British Commandos.
The next group was Airifx British Infanty.
The next group of figures was Airfix German Infantry.
The next group was of some Airfix Gurkhas.
The next group was Japanese Infantry. It looks like all the poses are here.
Besides the World War II Airfix figures there was some Modern Germans and some British.
There was 24 Italian Infantry inside the box.
There are 7 poses in the Airfix Italian set.
I have been looking for some more Airfix Italians for a while. I think this set was one of the last World War II 1/32 scaled figure sets that Airfix made.
Here are some Vintage Western figures that I picked up. I think they are a mixture of Crescent and Cherilea figures.
I purchased this used Ultimate Soldier 1/32 Japanese Zero for $25.00. It is missing a couple of pieces I think. I want to add this to a diorama that I plan on making later this year.
I received this W. Britain Collector’s Club Viking figure about 2 months ago. The last picture has a Conte Viking figure that I painted.
Rodion Makheav sent me some preview pictures of Warhansa sets. I also found a few more. Most of these sets should be available in by the end of March.
I think these figures are about Conan the Barbarian. Conan was one of my favorite comics to read growing up.
These looks like another Conan inspired set.
This figure appears to be of Lenin.
This figure is of Harald Hardrada the King of Norway form 1046 to 1066. He is part of the 1066 Saga for the Throne of Britain. Harald lived a very interesting and adventurous life. He met his end at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066.
Here are the World War II Russian Infantry again.
Here are some figures from Runecraft Miniatures. I think they are part of Publius. They make some interesting figures in 1/32 scale. I don’t know when these will be available to USA customers.
You can find the Publius Saxons again on eBay. This time they are in blue.
The picture above is a preview of post that I will be doing in the near future. That is it for now.
Here is another update on what is going on in the hobby of Toy Soldiers with some news & reviews.
Earlier in the week I received the set 1 of WWII German Paratroopers from Plastic Platoon. I took a few pictures to show off the details and then compared them to some Conte WWII Germans. I had purchased these figures from Alex Alexeev. You can go to his eBay site with this link NEW!! PLASTIC PLATOON,GERMAN Fallschirmjägers set1,rubber plastic soldiers 1:32.
The detail in these figures is stunning. I got so excited that I was almost speaking in German, lol.
The material is almost like the Conte figures. They are about the same scale as the Conte figures too. As I took some pictures of the figures I was glad to see all the different scenarios that could be told with the facial expressions or poses of the figures.
Today Mikhaul of Plastic Platoon sent me a message about Set 2 of the German Paratroopers. He said they should be available in March. Here are some pictures that he sent me of the sculpts.
These figures are really nice too. The details are amazing.
Here are some more pictures of the Plastic Platoon British Infantry that should be out next month.
Here are some more pictures of the Russian Infantry prototype figures by Warhansa. The proportions look a lot better with this latest set.
The last set of news that I have is this preview of the box for WW II German Elite Infantry in winter dress. They look better than their earlier Germans. Hopefully they can fill a hole for your collection if the figure are the same scale as Airfix or Marx. We should see this set some time this year.
Greetings my fellow collectors. Today I have some hobby related news to share with you. I have some information from Alex Pisarev who is the owner of Prikav. He shared with me two sets that I didn’t know anything about.
The first and newest set is of the Indochina war of 1947-54, and represents the parachutists of the French Foreign Legion. The “Dien Bien Phu” series: “2 BELs” (“2 battalion of paratroopers of the Foreign Legion”). The scale 1/32 (54 mm).
The set consists of five figures: 1) a sergeant-chef in a parade cap and a parade shirt with a sash, 2) a legionary-parachutist in a hat, full display and with an amphibious version of a MAS-38 rifle, 3) a legionary-parachutist in a beret, with a dagger, attacking hand-to-hand, 4) legionary-parachutist in a helmet, full display, with an amphibious version of the MAS-38 rifle, shooting from the knee, 5) girl (nurse) with a MAS-38 rifle (collective image based on the movie “Charlie Bravo”) .
I don’t know if this subject was ever covered in Plastic. This war led to the USA getting into the Vietnam war.
It is an interesting subject to cover. I guess you could combine some Vietnam based figures with these. The next set is Medieval based.
The second set is based on the early Russian Viking history. Alex told me that “Last fall I released a set of “Squad”, which consists of four figures: a noble horse warrior, two noble foot soldiers and a girl warrior. All four figures are dressed in ancient Russian armor. The rider from the southern part of Ancient Russia, the bearded warrior, too. But the young warrior and the girl are conceived and made so that they can be Russians, Scandinavians, Saxons, and even Czechs or other Western Slavs. I wanted to combine the history of Europe and the history of Russia in this set.”
I like this set of Noble Warriors. The details are nice. I can see the horse rider smashing through a shield wall or chasing down some people. The female warrior will be a great addition to any battlefield.
I am talking to Alex about putting together an interview. I will have more information about him and his figures in the near future.
Here are some pictures of prototypes of Soviet WWII Soldiers by Warhansa. These are part of new sets coming out at the around February. The scale is 1/32, approximately 54mm like classic toy soldiers.
Here are some pictures of the first run World War II British Infantry from Plastic Platoon from the “Battle of Crete” series above.
I ordered this Wigwam Terrain piece on eBay a couple of weeks ago. It reminded me of some of Barzso Playset’s Woodland Indian village pieces. It fits in perfect with the Barzso figures. Here is the link if you are interested WOODLAND INDIANS WIGWAM DIORAMA 54mm CAST FOAM ATHERTON SCENICS (#9902).
Besides the Wigwam village piece that I got on eBay I also got these Barzso Villagers from Ed Borris. He purchased a bunch of sets that Ron Barzso had left. At one point Ron fooled around with the idea of having his figures cast in metal. They look to be the same size and have the same amount of detail as the resin cast figures. You can go to Ed’s eBay page over here Never released! Barzso brushed metal pewter “Indians in Camp Set:, Brand New!. Here are some more pictures below. A few at the end show the metal figures compared to the resin copies.
Well folks that is it for now. Thank you for reading.
The Publius Vikings Set #4 that I ordered from Russia about 3 weeks ago arrived yesterday. These are premium figures at a premium price. The figures are made out a hard rubbery material. The color is dark brown. The size is 60mm. I purchased them through eBay, NEW!!! “PUBLIUS” VIKING WARRIORS, 8 rubber plastic soldiers 1:32 60mm.
Eight figures are included in this set. Most will be used as Vikings but I might use one or two as Saxons. We need more Saxons and Normans if anyone who owns a company is reading this, lol. Also included in this set for the first time was a female figure. All the figures are highly detailed. All the poses are of action. They are about the same size as the Conte Viking figures. Some are a little bigger like the male Archer. I will paint these figures like the other Publius figures that I own. Here are some more pictures below that compare them to Conte Vikings.
There should be more new sets this year of Medieval figures. Take Care for now. Thank you for reading.
Hello everyone. I have a lot of Medieval news today. First is review of a set of Rus Vikings from Prikaz that I purchased recently. Under the title Prikaz. Prince court #3. Russian Prince Rurik. on eBay I found this set. The set includes 5 figures for about $65.00. Prikaz is a company from Russia. They cast sets in a very limited amount. I think only die hard collectors of Medieval figures will purchase this set. I picked up the other 2 sets last year.
Prince Rurik. He is the founder of the Rurik Dynasty, which ruled the Kievan Rus.
His brother Truvor
His brother Sineus
Battle priest with Perun (slavic god of thunder and lightning) banner
Princess Rogneda (Ragnhild)
I will use these figures in a display that I have been planning to put together. I probably will use these figures as either Vikings or Saxons. I like all of these figures. Especially the figure of the Prince in his throne.
These figures look nice when mixed with the ones made by Conte. Some are bigger than others.
Here are more pictures above. If you click on the pictures they will expand. These figures are made out of a soft rubbery material like the Conte figures. Some of these figures had a few marks of a different color on them. I am planning to paint these so the marks are not a problem for me.
In my last blog post I had mentioned these Viking figures above. Afterward I had gotten some more information. They are made by Gudred, he is a specialist on the Viking Age. He is making sets of Vikings that are authentic. Right now there are some hard resin sets that are made in Russia. They might be made in plastic one day. If I hear any other news I will keep you updated. I have some more pictures below.
This is Set #1. They are Swedish Vikings.
Set #2. This one is also of Swedish Vikings. I think this set of Vikings are Professional Warriors. There are plans to make more sets of Danes and Norwegians too. These figures are about the same size of Conte figures.
We have some more news from Conte this week too. No plans on recasting their old plastic sets. They have plans for making new plastic sets. Right now they thinking about making Romans and/or Vikings first. Maybe we will see something like the figures above? They are still looking for feedback of the plastic sets. You can read more at Conte Collectibles Plastic Update.
Also they mention plans about terrain pieces in the future. I hope to see some new Medieval buildings. The Medieval Church would be a welcome addition.
Also I did a straw poll last week and after 163 Votes this is the results. I will be doing some more polls in the future and keep collecting the data to share with others.
Tomorrow I will post another Interview so come back to check that out. Thank you for reading and Take Care.
