An Interview with Ron Barzso of Barzso Playsets.

“Remember the feeling you had as a kid when you received a playset for a present?”

“Looking at the box, opening those little bags that contained treasures never before seen, setting up for the first time… Well, now you can recapture those feelings with a brand new playset from BARZSO PLAYSETS!”

barzso-playsets

These are the words you will see when you visit the Barzso Playset website. In 1993 Ron brought back the second Golden Age of Toy Soldier Playsets. Barzso Playsets released their first playset “Roger’s Rangers, In the Attack on St. Francis”.

The Figures1

It was the first new American produced playset in about 25 years. Barzso Playsets would release a new playset almost every year after for the next 25 years. Most of his products were focused on early American history. From early colonial history to the American Civil War. The French & Indian War was a major theme of his. The Native American Indian figures are some of the best figures every produced. He also brought to life some of our childhood classic stories like John Stevenson’s “Treasure Island” and the medieval tale of “Robin Hood”.

Wigwam1

Most of there early figures were casted in resin and so were the playset accessories. Their products were made in the USA. Later on they used plastic injected molds to make the figures and they were made in China. They still continued to use resin casted character figures and accessories that are made here in the USA.

Barzso China

Besides producing some great playsets Barzso sold figure packs, different kinds of small accessories and foam buildings. But some of his best products had to be the forts and castles they made.

Barzso Playset3

Barzso brought collectors dreams come to life. Today his products are very desirable and can command a premium price.

Barzso Playset A

This year at the Chicago Toy Soldier Show Barzso Playsets in a joint venture with LOD Enterprises will release a playset together.

Yorktown1

The other day I got a chance to talk to Ron Barzso and ask him a few questions. He and his family were busy packaging their final playset the “Battle of Yorktown: Attack on Redoubt #10”.

We talked over the phone. This was the first time I did an interview over the phone. I had some questions written out to ask. The conversion was almost a half hour. As we talked I took notes to use later on for this article. The conversation moved into different directions as you will see as you read further.

Warhorse Miniatures: Hi Ron, thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions. I would like to say I am a big fan of your work and have followed your company for a while now. It started with the first playset, Roger’s Rangers.

My first questions is; Who is Ron Barzso and how did all of this start?

Ron Barzso: (Ron laughed at who is Ron Barzso) Ron told me he was a 5th grade teacher(his wife Mary is also a teacher) and a collector of toy soldiers. He would go to the shows in the 1980’s with like sixty dollars in his pocket and be amazed at the prices that some of the playsets were going for. After a while Ron got tired of seeing nothing new being produced or nothing that he was interested in. He started doing some research on making his own playsets. After seeing collectors spending a lot on old toys he realized that there would be a market for his products. So he started reaching out to different companies. He started working with some small local companies to start the business.

Plastic Addict

Roger’s Rangers raiding. Here is a picture from the http://playsetaddict.com/

Warhorse Miniatures: One of the main themes of your sets is early American Colonial history. Your first set was Roger’s Rangers playset. What was the main reason that you started here.

Ron Barzso: Ron told me he loved history. One of his favorite movies is “Northwest Passage” He said “that would be a cool playset”. He saw an ad about Hudon Allen Studio. He contacted them and met Ken Olsen. Ken was the sculptor of the Roger’s Rangers figures. Ron used a few different companies to put together the playset. One did the figures and accessories. Another produced the buildings.

NW1

Barzso Rangers1Barzso Rangers2

Warhorse Miniatures: One of the things that I remember about your sets is the amount of detail given. Of all your playsets, do you have a favorite? Or which one was the most fun to produce.

Ron Barzso: After about 15 seconds of thought Ron said he had two that came to mind. “The Last of the Mohicans and Treasure Island”.

Treasure Island is one of Ron’s favorite books. Ron reread Treasure Island and used details from the book to design some of accessories. The late Steve Lortz sculpted the figures. Ron had a lot fun bringing this playset to life.

Barzso Playset2

The second set was “Last of the Mohicans”. While at the West Coast Show in the mid 1990’s Ron was approached by some executives from 21st Century. They wanted Ron to develop a playset for them. These executives were also collectors of toys soldiers. After some talks they agreed to use “Last of the Mohicans” for the playset. Ron like the characters and story. Plus the historical background. Wes Studi even autographed a picture of himself for each playset. Ron said about 550 playsets were made. He was able to visit the studio set of the movie. They gave Ron some movie stills and few blue print designs they used in the movie. One of the blue prints was of Fort William Henry which Ron said is about twelve feet by 3 feet. It is a everlasting reminder of the playset and movie for him.

Barzso LOTM1

Both of these sets were followed up with expansion sets. A few ships where made and a Pirates cove set were made to go with the Treasure Island set. For the Last of the Mohicans set they made Fort William Henry.

Barzso Playset2aFort William Henry

Warhorse Miniatures: In 2017 you allowed Ken Ciak of LOD Enterprises to produce your Medieval and Revolutionary War figures. Now that your going to retire soon, do you have any plans for Ken to produce some of your other sets? And if yes, which other sets?

Ron Barzso: Ron said that he sold the rights to the Robin Hood medieval molds, Lexington Green molds and the Yorktown figure molds to Ken. They came to an agreement to work on the Yorktown Playset together. Ken providing the figures and Ron gathering the other parts for the playset.

Ron never did answer the second part of the question. But I asked Ken about it and he said “Ron and I have discussed his molds and the opportunity to purchase them. We have not delved too deep into the details but will look to do so in Schaumburg” at the Chicago Toy Soldier Show.

(As we talked about this Ron jumped back to question about favorite playsets)

Ron Barzso: Ron said he enjoyed meeting Fess Parker while they developed the Fess Parker Daniel Boone Playset. This was another licensed playset. He spent over 3 hours talking to Fess. Fess was surprised about that there was any interest about him acting as Daniel Boone after all the years. This playset was almost produced as much as the Last of the Mohicans playset.

Daniel Boone1Daniel Boone2

(from here we jumped into the prices of Barzso)

Ron Barzso: Ron said he was a little surprised about prices of what some of his products are going for now. But he said collectors will spend whatever their willing to get what they want. He said he gets requests for some of his items that are over 17 year old sometimes. And that collectors from around the globe send such requests.

The Figures Native

Warhorse Miniatures: You told me that you plan to retire after the Yorktown playset. If you could design another playset what would it be?

Ron Barzso: After some thought, Ron says that he would have liked to do a science fiction based playset. Maybe either the movies “Forbidden Planet” or “The Time Machine”. He said that he didn’t know what he would have used as the main display for Forbidden Planet. He said the idea of the Morlocks with the Time Machine would have been fun.

Forbidden PlanetThe Time Machine

I later found some pictures of toys and images of what could have been?? The Barzso “Forbidden Planet” playset.

or The Barzso “The Time Machine” playset.

If Ron ever makes another playset I bet it will be really cool. I brought up the idea of zombies or the Walking Dead. He liked the Walking Dead zombie figures that where made at one point. He is surprised that they were not produced into a bigger production.

Walking Dead3

Warhorse Miniatures: Any new details about the Yorktown set you would like to share with us?

Ron Barzso: Ron talked a little about he history of the battle. He mentioned about the Redoubt #10 being a surprise attack and the American soldiers were ordered not to load their muskets. They would use their bayonets to charge the British to take the redoubt.

He said the redoubt would have 3 sides. Six different sets of figures included. A few character figures like Alexander Hamilton and George Washington. The figures were sculpted by Jim Holloway. These were some of the things he divulged.

We then talked about how much he liked the action poses that these figures had. He also mentioned that he had planned to originally release this playset the year after the Lexington Green set. But he ran out of gas and put it to the side until now. He is excited now to finally release the Yorktown set.

Warhorse Miniatures: This is my last question. I would like to thank you for the time you took to answer the questions. It saddens me that your retiring. At the same time I am happy to see that you will be enjoying yourself in retirement. Is there anything else that you would like to say about Barzso Playsets?

Ron Barzso: One of the things that we discussed was some of Ron’s plans when he retires. He talked about traveling and his interest in preserving wild flowers. He also mentioned that it was mainly he and his wife that would handle the daily tasks of the business. From taking the orders, to packaging item to be shipped. It was overwhelming at times. He is ready to retire. He is glad to have met all the collectors over the years. He has many fond memories of the toy soldiers and toy shows.

Ron will now be retired but he still will be at some of the shows for the near future.

Ron-Barzso

Ron & Mary Barzso

This is the conclusion to the interview. As I was looking for some figures to take a few pictures of, I found some old flyers that Barzso Playsets would mail out to customers. I thought it would be interesting to take a few pictures of those. It was nice that Ron would send a personalized note at times to thank you or answer a question that you might have sent with an order.

Ron-Barzso1

I also came across some old order forms. I wish these items were still in stock );

I have been collecting Barzso playset products off and on since almost the beginning. Their playsets of early American History and Native Americans are my favorite sets from Barzso.

I hope that LOD Enterprises will continue the legacy of Barzso Playset. I have a feeling they will.

Latest News! September 3rd, 2018. HaT Toy Soldiers SYW Prussians 1/32 Scale Return!!! ATS Sale, And……???

Prussians1

Hat SYW Prussians5

Hat SYW Prussians6

It is a very exciting time for us collectors this time of the year. The Chicago Toy Soldier Show is less than a few weeks away. Usually the toy companies will release new products or show some prototypes at the show. Last week HaT finally re-stocked the Seven Years War Prussian sets in 1/32 scale. These sets will be available this month(September). I have been looking for these for almost 5 years now. I really like these figures. Hopefully they will release the new 1/32 scaled Seven Years War Austrians soon.

9401_front9402_frontbx9400a

The sets are sold as Marching, Action and Command.

Hat SYW Prussians

With these sets you can change hats of the figures to make them look as either Musketeers, Fusiliers or Grenadiers.

hatpr7yw10

Prussians3

You can get these sets for around $15.00 or less.

Besides being used as Prussians these figures can be easily used as Hessian mercenaries that served for the British in the American Revolution. The mix well with the new LOD/Barzso figures.

Prussians

I like the Grenadier hats the best. The details on those hats are really nice and have a nice shape to them. Other plastic Grenadier figures that have been made over the years have some weird shaped hats.

Also this week ATS Toy Soldiers has a sale of 20% off your order with a purchase of 2 items or more! You can check that out over at ATS Toy Soldiers.

I was going to write up a post this weekend about some vintage figures that I got last month. I will most likely get to that at the end of the month or in October. Instead of relaxing this weekend, I went to work on Sunday.

Next week I will have an exciting blog post. It will be another interview. On Saturday I did an interview over the phone with someone that I have been wanted to do for a long time now. That is it for now. Thanks for reading.

Latest News! August 26th, 2018. New Sets, Barzso/LOD Enterprise, Paragon, X-Force, BMC Toys. Vintage Toy Soldiers.

It has been almost a month since my last post. I was planning on doing a post in the beginning of the month about some vintage toys soldiers that I had picked up from Europe. The main focus was going to be of this huge box of figures that I had purchased off of eBay.

The Box1The Box2

Unfortunately my Father passed away. He was 81 and had been ill the last few years. He joined the Navy when he was 16 and served 4 years from 1955 to 1959. He later joined the NYPD in 1961 and retired in 1989 as a Lieutenant. He shared with me his love of history and we traveled to many different Civil War Battlefields over the years. He wasn’t a toy collector, but he purchased many historical related toys over the years for me and my brother when we were kids. That got me started as a collector years later.

I am going to keep the post short. There are a few new sets that were released or will be released soon.

Latest News

LOD released their new Revolutionary figures this month. I had pre-ordered 15 sets. I received them about 10 days ago. The figures are are the 1/32 in scale. Here are pictures of them below.

The sculpting is really nice and blend very well with the other Barzso colonial figures. The weapons were bent on a lot of these figures but straightened out by using the hot & cold water treatment. The British regulars are my favorite set out of the 4 new sets released.

Besides all the great action poses these sets have, one of my favorite poses is the British soldier that is marching with his rifle held to his chest and resting on his shoulder.

These figures will fill in a gap of much need poses for any collector of early American history figures.

The Chicago Toy Soldier Show is less than a month away. Barzso Playset will release the Yorktown playset. This will Barzso’s last playset. I was lucky enough to pre-order the set at the Indiana Toy Soldier show. From what I hear, it will be great. After setting up some of these figures for a small display I have no doubt it should be nice.

We also got some to see the new Christmas figures too. They should be available in the cream color next year. They remind me of the vintage Christmas figures from my childhood. Head over to the LOD Enterprises Toy Soldiers now!

X-Force has some new sets coming out soon. The first of the Celtic Barbarian sets is out now. These figures are 60mm. 60 CBT 01 Warband (Infantry)

Here are the latest pictures blown up of the future Celtic figures that should be released later this year.

Celtic Preview1Celtic Preview2

These figures look really nice. I will have to add these to my collection.

Here is the latest from Paragon. They should be released in the near future.

Our final set in the Alamo series will be a combination of infantry and cavalry. There will be 12 figures in each bag and 4 horses.

There will be additional bare heads and heads wearing Presidio (Zorro type) hats. The two cavalry figures will each have an additional right arm so you can have lots of figure combinations.

Look for them soon!

This will be their last figures in the Alamo range. I think they will have some more Wild West sets coming next year.

BMC IWO JIMA

Here is the redone BMC Iwo Jima playset. They added a couple of things. The main difference is the color to the figures with is a great improvement. This is my favorite playset they have made so far. You can see more over here BMC Toys

That is it on the latest hobby news. I have a few preview pictures on the box that I got earlier this month. I will go into detail about that next time. Thank you for reading, take care.

Latest News! July 1st, 2018. Toy Soldier News, Yard Sale Finds, and Paragon Sioux Indians Review.

Latest News

Greetings everyone, here is another blog article on the hobby. In this post we will cover some news about Toy Soldiers, yard sale finds and some products that I purchased off the internet.

Before I start I am sorry to say that William Lango has passed away at the age of 74. He was the promoter of the East Coast Toy Soldier Show for about 35 years. He also published the magazine Toy Soldier review for many years. I met him a few times over the years at the shows. He was a really nice guy. He will surely be missed. Gentlemen like Bill are the reason I started a blog page in the first place. He inspired me to continue promoting the hobby of Toy Soldiers.

Yard Sales1

I went out hunting again the past few weeks and here are a few things that I found. First I stopped at a few yard sales. I got these 4 trees about a minute away from my house for a twenty five cents each.

Yard Sales Star Wars

I got this Star Wars figure for $1.00, a nice find.

While at an antique store I found a bag of toys. Here are some of my favorite figures that I found inside.

Antiques1

Some Vintage 54mm Marx Indians and some green Hong Kong Indians that were a little smaller.

Antiques2

Some Vintage Marx Union Civil War Soldiers in powder blue and some other vintage western figures. They look like they are 54mm or 1/32 in scale.

Antiques4

Here is another picture of the cowboy, I never seen this one before.

Antiques7Antiques8

Here are some 54mm Marx World War II Americans and Germans.

Antiques9

Here is a vintage Marx Robin Hood figure. This figure is 1/32 in scale.

Antiques10

Some more vintage World War II American toy soldiers. These figures are about 45mm.

Antiques11

This figure looks like Batman. This is 1/32 in scale.

Antiques13Antiques14

This MPC Soldier looks like he is being attacked by some type of alien. I guess quality control was not that good back then. This figure is 1/32 in scale.

Antiques5Antiques6

Those trees already came in handy for this picture. I think these deer are made by Marx. These figures are 1/32 in scale.

The Find

Reisler Animals

I found these on eBay the other day. They are a mixture of farm animals in 1/32 scale by Reisler of Denmark. I am always looking for things to add to make my displays come to life. These farm animals are great for that. I got these for about $13.00.

Reisler Animals8

You don’t see to many cats in this scale. These are really nice.

Reisler Animals1

These piglets are excellent too.

Reisler Animals7

Some Rooster and Chickens.

Reisler Animals6

You don’t see to many ducks either.

Reisler Animals5

A few young horses.

Reisler Animals4

Here are some lamb and rams.

Reisler Animals3

Some young calves.

Reisler Animals2

And lastly a Billy goat and a jumping kid.

Reisler Cowboys1

Reisler Cowboys2

Here are some 54mm Cowboys that were also made by Reisler. I also got these on eBay for $9.99. They look like ranch hands. The guy with the throwing knife is an unusual pose for a Cowboy.

Vintage Indians6

After I got those Marx Indians last month I started searching on eBay to get a few more. I got lucky with this auction. 68 Vintage Indians for $9.99. Most of these figures are in very good condition. I bid on this auction for the brown 54mm Marx Indians. The other Indians were a pleasant surprise once I looked at them first hand.

Marx Indians1

I am planning on using some of these Indians with the Barzso Great Buffalo Hunt playset. They should mix well.

Here are some pictures of the other Indians that were in that lot. Some are also from Marx. Most of these have broken weapons. Some have some really nice details.

Warhansa Pirates1

Here are some future pirate figures that Warhansa is working on. They said these figures are 1/32 in scale. The weapons seem to still be over sized. They should be available in a few months.

Toy Soldier Review ~ Paragon Sioux Indians

Paragon Indians

I finally got a few sets of the new Paragon Sioux Indians. For the price of around $30.00 you get 4 mounted Sioux Indians in 2 different poses. Plus another 8 figures on foot that you can get 5 different poses. Two of the figures have plug in hands. You can create 4 different combinations  of weapons that these warrior could use. They are 1/32 in scale are about the same size as the TSSD Plains Indians.

Here was the first pose I made. I gave him a Tomahawk and knife to weld into battle.

Here is the next pose that I made. I gave this warrior a spear and shield to protect himself. The other poses would be a Tomahawk & Shield or Spear & knife.

Here is one of my favorite poses in this set. This warrior is running and shooting the bow. His face reminds me of Wes Studi a little.

wes-studi

This pose is unique and my least favorite pose. Only because I can not re-use this pose easily. I will try to convert these figures first one day…

Paragon Indians14

Paragon Indians15

Here is another nice pose. This warrior has a carbine.

Paragon Indians7

Paragon Indians7a

Here are the two mounted poses. They are both very nice. The are mounted on TSSD horses.

Paragon Indians8aParagon Indians9

I like this pose. It can be used in many different scenarios. A classic pose. I like the touch of having a quiver and bow on his back too. The figure can also be pushed so he is resting on the mane of the horse. These figures rest nicely on the horse’s back and you don’t have to be worried about them failing off easily.

Paragon Indians10

I like this pose too. This is a realistic pose of getting close and have better odds of hitting someone after you shot the rifle. Plus doing more damage.

Paragon Indians Attack A

Here are the Paragon Sioux Indians raiding a TSSD Plains Indian camp.

Paragon Indians Attack3Paragon Indians Attack4Paragon Indians Attack5Paragon Indians Attack6

The Paragon and TSSD Indians are a perfect match. I am glad that they use the same brand horses. I like the Paragon plastic better than the TSSD. They are less rubbery than the TSSD and it is easier to straightening the bent weapons using he hot/cold water treatment.

Time is almost up for Crowdfunding * Hat 1/32 Seven Years War Austrians

The Crowdfunding for this project started in the beginning of February. They said that they would keep this open for 3 months to fund this project. I hope that they got enough support to produce these figures even if they didn’t make it to stage 10. These figures have the potential to fill a lot of gaps with my collection. Besides being used as Austrians for the SYW, that could also be used as Hessian mercenaries too for the American Revolution. If you have not pledged yet, click on this link Hat 1/32 Seven Years War Austrians.

A good sign is that they have made the prototypes to create the molds.

The design of these figures are really good. It will be a bargain to get 18 figures for the cost of around $15.00. Even if you are not the biggest fan of this subject it will help support the future production of 1/32 figures from Hat.

Barzso & LOD are producing 4 more American Revolutionary sets later this year. The Yorktown set is based on Redoubt #10. The British defended this Redoubt against the Americans. Redoubt #9 was defended by a mix of Hessian & British troops that was attacked by French forces. The Hat Austrians could help fill in as Hessian mercenaries.

Here are some pictures showing the Hat Prussians they did years ago. They blend in very well with the Barzso figures. I think the new Austrians should be the same. So if you want to see these figures made, pledge here Hat 1/32 Seven Years’ War Austrians

Jim Clouse had shared this picture and comment “Ron Barzso previewed the new character figures (original sculpts) for the Battle of Yorktown playset. George Washington is firing the first cannon shot to open the siege. At right, is Alexander Hamilton, who commanded the assault on Redoubt #10.”

Also LOD is having a pre-sale on the new unreleased Revolutionary sets that go with the Yorktown set.

Hat 1/32 7YW Austrians prototypes sizing

Here is the latest update on the Hat 1/32 Seven Years War Austrians. They posted some pictures of the prototypes. I hope this is a good sign that maybe we shall see these sets produced. The Crowdfunding 1/32 7 Years War Austrians is still active. If you have not pledged to get these sets made, please pledge now.

“Comparison with 1/32 Wurttembergers. Production figures should have 4% shrinkage and thinner base.”

I wrote an article about this in an earlier post, you can read and see more pictures here Crowdfunding * Hat 1/32 Seven Years War Austrians.

Besides these figures being used as Seven Years War Austrians, some of these figures could be used as Hessian Musketeers that served in the British Army during the American Revolution.  The Barzso/LOD Revolutionary figures sets are coming and so is the Yorktown playset.  These will be a welcome addition to reinforce your troops.

Toy Soldier Preview ~ LOD Enterprises Barzso Playsets Revolutionary War Infantry Sets

Last week Ken Ciak of LOD Enterprises Toy Soldiers shared with us some pictures of the prototypes of the new American Revolution Infantry sets. This is a joint venture with Barzso Playsets. There are 4 new sets that will be released later this year. The sets include British Regulars, British Light Infantry, American Regulars and American Light Infantry. Each set will include 8 different poses. The figures will be the same scale as the earlier sets of Colonial Militia and British Grenadiers that were done by Barzso and now produced by LOD.

Click on the pictures above to get a closer look at the pictures. Below are some pictures of the prototypes and figures from the older British Grenadiers & American Colonial Militia sets.

The color of the British Regulars set will be the same as the British Grenadier set. The color of the American Regulars set will be the same as the Colonial Militia set.

The color of the light infantry sets for both sides will be a slightly lighter shade of red and blue.

British Regular

Rev5

The action poses of the British Regulars are really nice.

British 21st Reg of Foot

Rev6

The British Light Infantry set is a nice surprise. The action poses are really good too.

Queen's Rangers

With some customizing we can have some Queen’s Rangers.

American Continental

Rev8

The American Regulars looks really good too. Looks like they are ready to assault the redoubts at Yorktown.

Light Infantry 4th Mass

Rev7

Lastly the American Light Infantry is filled with action too.

These sets will be make a fine addition to the earlier Revolutionary sets. There should be a Yorktown playset later this year. And so far by the looks of it, it should be epic. When you combine the new sets with the older sets you will start will over 45 different poses to go with the future Barzso/LOD Yorktown playset. And for those of us that can customize figures, we have a lot to work with to create new poses.

On a different note, Hat is still having the crowdfunding for SYW Austrians and they would make great Hessian Musketeers for the British Army.  Musketeer, Hessian Regiment Von Bose, Yorktown 1781

Toy Soldier Preview X-Force 1812 Militia

Here is a preview of some of the Expeditionary Force War of 1812 American Militia. Some of these figures could also be used as Alamo defenders or American militia units from the American Revolution and the French & Indian War. These should be available later this year. I will get a set of these to use with the Barzso/LOD Revolutionary sets coming out later this year. I will be doing a post on those other sets later this weekend.
