Columbus Ohio Toy Soldier Show 2021 Review Part 1

Sunday was the 2021 Columbus Toy Soldier Show. The vendors at the show were shouting “Covid, Give me back my Collectors….” Besides the low crowd it was actually not a bad show. There were plenty of vintage playsets, Barzso Playsets, painted metal toy soldiers and plastic figures galore. Plus my new resin miniatures.

I found a few vintage Airfix Toy Soldiers, Original Barzso bagged figure sets at original prices!!, W. Britain Saxons, Painted Russian metal Viking figures and an Atherton Medieval Church. The second part of the review will be on what I found over the weekend & some of the places where we went. Plus some updates about Warhorse Miniatures.

Paul Amody had a bunch of his Russian made metal miniatures with him. The painting is outstanding.

John Atherton & Shane Leonard brought plenty of their foam products. They are great to add to playsets or for display pieces.

Fellow collector Scott Campbell showed me some of his Barzso figures that he had painted. I always like to talk to fellow collectors to see what they are working on. I sometimes learn some tips or am able to share my own.

Rick Eber had about half of Barzso Playsets available at the show yesterday. There were about 15 total playsets spread out with different vendors. Rick also had plenty of vintage Marx plastic toy soldiers.

John Hamilton had some vintage plastic toy soldiers and other vintage toys.

Robert Horning had his hand crafted & hand painted figures with him. He produces a bunch of different themes from Aliens, Ancients, WWII and even Golf. Plus much more.

Rick Keller had plenty of vintage plastic toys soldiers. Mostly Marx. He had loose figures, bagged sets and some playsets.

Larry Lovely had some loose figures to rummage through. He also had a Barzso Treasure Island playset and some foam pieces.

Mike Lonigro had a mixture of Tin Litho buildings, plastic figures and some playsets.

Todd Nace also had some playsets and storage containers full of vintage plastic toy soldiers. He also had a customized Barzso kneelboat. I think it was the Lewis & Clark boat.

Here was the vendor next to Rick Eber. I didn’t catch his name. He had some vintage figures and other toys.

Rod Chapman had a bunch of antique painted metal dimestore toy soldiers & other antique toys. His Grandson was very kind to help us pack up after the show.

I did enjoy the show. I sold the Duke’s Tower to a lucky collector at a good price. It was a little below retail cost. I was surprised that more collectors didn’t come out. They missed out on a lot of good stuff. Most of the vendors will now get ready for next year. Most of us keep our products off the internet. We save them for the shows. I will be at more shows next year.

I would like to thank all the collectors that have shown interest in my work in creating a 11th Century early Medieval world. Thank you for the feedback also. It helps me with the further development of things to come.

I spent most of the day pricing and packing toys for the show. Carolyn helped me ship out the first batch of orders of our 1st set. Most of the items I am bringing to the show are new production. Besides the Warhorse Miniatures we also have a bunch of the LOD/Barzso resin figures and Foam houses. Plus some of the Russian resin toy soldiers. The 40th Chicago Toy Soldier Show was last week. It had mixed reviews. I heard that sales were up and down for different vendors. Some had their best sales ever or close to it. Others did good but had better years. Then their were some dealers that had their worst sales ever. I also heard that the number of dealers was down. Most of this was because of the pandemic. They said the crowds were good and there was a new crop of young collectors present too. The younger collectors were looking for recent products. They were not too interested in the vintage playsets.

In a few weeks the Columbus Ohio Toy Soldier Show will be held. It is on Sunday October 17th. The show is from 10am to 3pm. It was a great show last year. It should be the same this year. There was plenty of plastic figures and playsets too. This year you can see the latest sets that Warhorse Miniatures is selling. Plus the prototypes. I will also have some of the LOD Barzso sets and foam houses. Plus some of the Russian made resin figure sets too. Many of the dealers will be bringing things they picked up at the Chicago Toy Soldier Show. Don’t miss this one!! Rodion over at Warhansa sent me a message about their latest Medieval based sets. Their figures are really nice. I really like how they have improved the quality of their miniatures over the years. The figures have great detail. They are 1/32 in scale. Close to the Conte Medieval figures. Plus they look great with the Warhorse Miniatures too!! Over at Warhorse Miniatures we continue to test things to insure that we produce products of high quality. We released our first set a few weeks ago for pre-order. In a few weeks we will announce our next release. We will focus on the figure sets for now and produce the houses and shops towards the end of the years.

The Chicago Toy Soldier Show is this week. I have never attended this show. I plan on attending next year. It should be a good show for those that plan on going since there was no show last year. Some of the vendors, collectors and toy soldier companies will miss the show because of virus related issues. While I miss the Chicago Show I will be at the Columbus Ohio Toy Soldier Show. This is a nice show. Full of things plundered from the Chicago Show also. Plus this is where Warhorse Miniatures premiers it’s new line of early Medieval England figures. We will have a full display of items available and prototypes of future things to come. I talked to Ken Ciak of LOD Toy Soldiers and here is what he told me. “Here are some photos of new items to be released this Thursday. Maid Marian in green along with her cohorts (accessories sold separately).“

“Athena and Ares in green (this is a CTSS exclusive in this color. Future sets will be in different colors).”

“We also have a three vulture set in green for the show. This is the first run and new LOD poses. These can be used on battlefields wherever there are casualties. We wanted a bird to accompany Ares as we have the owl on Athena’s shoulder (depicting wisdom).”

Plus the American Revolution Calvary sets will be available for the show too!!!!

Fellow collector Steve Pyle was generous to paint this prototype set of our Saxon Family Set #1. The last picture shows you size comparison between a Reamsa, Warhorse and Conte figures.

Here is what he had to say about them. “Here is the first test batch of Saxons from Mike Prendergast of Warhorse Miniatures. The first thing that struck me was that, unlike some 3D made figures, these are not brittle and have a really nice texture. All figures come in Burnt Orange (to match the Conte Saxons) @ $40 for a set of five or in a Bluish-Grey (for you painters out there) @ $30 for a set of five. I included a couple of photos with a WBritain Saxon. They go really nicely together, assuming you are wanting to paint them. I was pleasantly surprised at how nice and sharp the details are on these Warhorse figures. Beautiful!!”

The Latest News!! 08/28/2021. Warhorse Miniatures Anglo-Saxon update!!

It has been almost a month since my last post. We continue to tests and develop the early medieval figure sets. Production will start in late October. At this stage we are confident we will have 4 to 6 different sets ready at launch. Above is part of the Anglo-Saxon family set. Things are still in development and a few things can change.

Here is the head of the family. He is scouting the country side looking for any dangers that might lurk in the distance.

Here is a picture of the family in one of the resins we are currently testing. It is hard to get detailed pictures with my camera with the material. The foam house in the background is by Atherton Scenics.

Here is a test print on one of the houses we have designed. The house properly will be available early next year.

Here are some different resins being tested and some other brands to show size comparison. We will be making colors to match the plastic Conte medieval toy soldiers. The miniatures will also be scaled to be close to the size of the plastic Conte medieval figures and the W. Britain medieval figures.

The Latest News!! 07/31/2021. Warhorse Miniatures Anglo-Saxons.

In my last post we were talking about the new Anglo-Saxon figures I am creating. Production starts at the end of October. Today I have some more previews of prototypes and digital renders of what we are working one. We are in the process of test printing the figures and either changing or fine tuning them. Plus testing different resins to determine what type we will use.

Here are some pictures of digital renders and pictures of prototypes the Blacksmith shop. There are two figures. A Blacksmith and his assistant. The Blacksmith is hammering a spearhead. While the assistant is using a bellow on the fire in the forge. There also is a stone grinder, weapon rack, tool rack, anvil, forge, bench, coal or ash box, bucket with water. There are also some other things that will be included that are not in this picture like a bag of coal and some barrels. Some things might or will be changed before production.

Here are some digital renders and printed porotypes of the Saxon Potter set. The set will include a Potter & his wife, wood shelf, 3 different fire pits or kilns and some pottery. We have two different types of lean to type of structures. One to go against a house or wall and another that could be used on it’s own with a wattle type backing. They have thatched roofs. The Kilns will show how the process of firing the pottery is done. The first Kiln has the pottery placed in it. The second has the fire on top of the pottery. The third on shows the pottery after the fire died out and now it is in the ashes.

Here is one of the peasant figures that we are working on. He is the hunter. We have changed how he looks. We added a new face, a hood, quiver case. We resized the knife and hands. So far he has printed out nicely.

We also redesigned the “Pig Guy” or the boar herder. We changed the spearhead and made it longer. Adjusted his hands and changed his face.

Here are some other things we are working on. A couple of different houses and more figures. The sets we are working on now should be in final production in September. We will have a set of Anglo-Saxon Peasants, Stamford Bridge Add-On set, At least 2 different houses, a Blacksmith shop, a Potter shop and a Viking Raider camp. Maybe some other things if we have time. After that we hope to be able to release a new set every month. The goal for the first phase is to create a world. Show how the people lived and then show how others tried to destroy it…

Over the next month we will continue to work on resin mixtures to create a type that is both strong and flexible. We think we have what we are looking for right now. You can drop these figures from about 4 feet without breaking. There will be two different types of resin for the figures to choose from. One for the collector’s that are going to paint the miniatures and one for the plastic type collectors. The tests for dying the resin to create different colors will start in a couple of weeks. The Saxons we hope to match to the Conte Saxons in a rusty orange. The same goes for the Vikings & Normans that will eventually come. They will be matched to the Conte colors.

Circle your calendar for October 17th for the Columbus Toy Soldier show. At the show I will beginning selling my 3D printed miniatures. We will begin with some Anglo-Saxon figure sets, houses and other accessories. Plus a Viking Raider camp. Today in this post you will see some prototypes of a few figures. Some of these figures will or might be changed. Besides testing out the structural design of the figures we are also testing out different types of resins. Once we figure out what type and/or combination of resins we will start pricing of the figures and accessories. These miniatures are scaled to match Conte & W. Britain figures. They are around 57mm. Some might be a little bigger or smaller. I am labeling these as 1/31 in scale. Since they are not the true 54mm with is 1/32. Later on we will scale these figures and most of the accessories in the true 1/32 or 54mm and then 28mm.

Here is the original color of the resin for these prototypes. I later primed them and painted them a solid brown color to help show the details.

Here is a tall Saxon carrying some wheat that he just harvested. This figure is going to be redesigned.

Here is the last porotype that I have to show today. It is another Anglo-Saxon Peasant that is pulling a cart. The cart can be filled with a piece of chopped wood logs or a pile of wheat.

In the coming weeks we will be showing more previews and prototypes. This is only the beginning . We are on a journey to create a Anglo-Saxon village. There will be different houses, plenty of peasants, craftsmen and warriors. Once we finish the 1st phase we will expand into other themes.

Here is a set of Medieval Knights by Warhansa. Five figures in five different poses. They are made out of a rubbery type of resin. The set is based on some of the old Robin Hood or Ivanhoe Hollywood movies. The figures are nicely detailed and the pose are good too. The are about 57mm tall. Here is the Ukrainian Cossacks XVII century set by Kit Soldiers. They are a company from Ukraine. The set is made up of 8 figures in 8 different poses. The Latest News!! 07/07/2021. Conte Romans & LOD Barzso American Rangers Review. Plus Some Publius Vikings.

Welcome back for another post about toys soldiers. I hope all is well with everyone. As usual I have been real busy with work, eBay and all of my hobbies. No rest for the wicked… Today we will take a look at Conte’s new Romans, LOD Barzso American Rangers, some Publius Vikings.

I recently purchased some of Conte’s new Romans. They come in 3 different colors of Red, Silver & Gold. The are 1/32 in scale or about 57mm if they were standing tall. Each bag has 16 figures. They are packed nicely. Inside the plastic bag the figures are broken down in separate bags. Plus some have plastic supports.

Some of the figures can be customized with different arms. This way you can have some extra poses. Most of the Romans are armed with a Pilum or a Gladius. I am glad that Richard was able to produce these plastic toy soldiers. Because of the cost we see less plastic injected figures being made. I don’t have too many Ancient themed toy soldiers. The ones that I do have are Barbarians or Celtic Warriors. Now I have some Romans to fight them. We should see some future Roman sets down the line.

When I was collecting Barzso Playset products one of the sets that I wish I had purchased was the American Rangers. It is a hard set to find at a reasonable price in the secondary market. Now I don’t have to worry about that because Ken at LOD Toys Soldiers has reissued them again. They are cast from the original molds and in the original lime green color or close to it. This is a great set. They are a little bigger than the earlier Colonial sets but blend well with them.

Renamed “Roger’s Rangers 3” this set was originally released in 2010 for the Bushy Run playset. Seven figures in seven poses.

A few months ago I got these Publius Vikings. As usual they are super detailed. They are about 58mm in height not counting the base. The second Viking in the above picture is a little bigger than the others.

The cost of these figures is between $10 to $25 and can be found on eBay. They are cast in a rubbery type of resin.

These figures fit nicely with a bunch of different brands.

Today we remember the Brave American, British, Canadian & other allied Soldiers that gave their lives when they stormed the beaches of Normandy to fight the forces of Germany.

The Battle of Normandy, which lasted from June 1944 to August 1944, resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control. Codenamed Operation Overlord, the battle began on June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day, when some 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region. The invasion was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history and required extensive planning. Prior to D-Day, the Allies conducted a large-scale deception campaign designed to mislead the Germans about the intended invasion target. By late August 1944, all of northern France had been liberated, and by the following spring the Allies had defeated the Germans. The Normandy landings have been called the beginning of the end of war in Europe.

Today I am doing a quick post about some new products from Warhansa and then a figure from Publius. The first Warhansa set is called “Friends of Robin Hood”. There are 6 figures included. It looks like we get Little John, Friar Tuck, a Merry man with a pitchfork, Will Scarlet, a Jester and Maid Mirian.

The figures look really sharp. List as 1/32 in scale. They are nice size and will blend very well with Conte & Barzso medieval figures. The poses are good too. Weapons are to scale. I give them an A. The only figure I don’t need is the Jester. But he has his use in a court some where…

The other set is called “Forest Camp”. It has a camp fire and an animal spit roasting above it. Plus some barrels and chest. Some much needed accessories that we need a ton more for displays.

Here is a new figure by Publius. He is a mounted Native American or a Plains Indian on a horse. This figure is very nice. Again 1/32 in scale. He is a little bigger than the TSSD figures. But will make a nice leader for you figures.

I found these trees in a train hobby shop last month. I purchase about all that they had. Not bad for about $3.00 a piece.
