Latest News! July 1st, 2018. Toy Soldier News, Yard Sale Finds, and Paragon Sioux Indians Review.

Latest News

Greetings everyone, here is another blog article on the hobby. In this post we will cover some news about Toy Soldiers, yard sale finds and some products that I purchased off the internet.

Before I start I am sorry to say that William Lango has passed away at the age of 74. He was the promoter of the East Coast Toy Soldier Show for about 35 years. He also published the magazine Toy Soldier review for many years. I met him a few times over the years at the shows. He was a really nice guy. He will surely be missed. Gentlemen like Bill are the reason I started a blog page in the first place. He inspired me to continue promoting the hobby of Toy Soldiers.

Yard Sales1

I went out hunting again the past few weeks and here are a few things that I found. First I stopped at a few yard sales. I got these 4 trees about a minute away from my house for a twenty five cents each.

Yard Sales Star Wars

I got this Star Wars figure for $1.00, a nice find.

While at an antique store I found a bag of toys. Here are some of my favorite figures that I found inside.

Antiques1

Some Vintage 54mm Marx Indians and some green Hong Kong Indians that were a little smaller.

Antiques2

Some Vintage Marx Union Civil War Soldiers in powder blue and some other vintage western figures. They look like they are 54mm or 1/32 in scale.

Antiques4

Here is another picture of the cowboy, I never seen this one before.

Antiques7Antiques8

Here are some 54mm Marx World War II Americans and Germans.

Antiques9

Here is a vintage Marx Robin Hood figure. This figure is 1/32 in scale.

Antiques10

Some more vintage World War II American toy soldiers. These figures are about 45mm.

Antiques11

This figure looks like Batman. This is 1/32 in scale.

Antiques13Antiques14

This MPC Soldier looks like he is being attacked by some type of alien. I guess quality control was not that good back then. This figure is 1/32 in scale.

Antiques5Antiques6

Those trees already came in handy for this picture. I think these deer are made by Marx. These figures are 1/32 in scale.

The Find

Reisler Animals

I found these on eBay the other day. They are a mixture of farm animals in 1/32 scale by Reisler of Denmark. I am always looking for things to add to make my displays come to life. These farm animals are great for that. I got these for about $13.00.

Reisler Animals8

You don’t see to many cats in this scale. These are really nice.

Reisler Animals1

These piglets are excellent too.

Reisler Animals7

Some Rooster and Chickens.

Reisler Animals6

You don’t see to many ducks either.

Reisler Animals5

A few young horses.

Reisler Animals4

Here are some lamb and rams.

Reisler Animals3

Some young calves.

Reisler Animals2

And lastly a Billy goat and a jumping kid.

Reisler Cowboys1

Reisler Cowboys2

Here are some 54mm Cowboys that were also made by Reisler. I also got these on eBay for $9.99. They look like ranch hands. The guy with the throwing knife is an unusual pose for a Cowboy.

Vintage Indians6

After I got those Marx Indians last month I started searching on eBay to get a few more. I got lucky with this auction. 68 Vintage Indians for $9.99. Most of these figures are in very good condition. I bid on this auction for the brown 54mm Marx Indians. The other Indians were a pleasant surprise once I looked at them first hand.

Marx Indians1

I am planning on using some of these Indians with the Barzso Great Buffalo Hunt playset. They should mix well.

Here are some pictures of the other Indians that were in that lot. Some are also from Marx. Most of these have broken weapons. Some have some really nice details.

Warhansa Pirates1

Toy Soldier Review ~ Paragon Sioux Indians

Paragon Indians

I finally got a few sets of the new Paragon Sioux Indians. For the price of around $30.00 you get 4 mounted Sioux Indians in 2 different poses. Plus another 8 figures on foot that you can get 5 different poses. Two of the figures have plug in hands. You can create 4 different combinations  of weapons that these warrior could use. They are 1/32 in scale are about the same size as the TSSD Plains Indians.

Here was the first pose I made. I gave him a Tomahawk and knife to weld into battle.

Here is the next pose that I made. I gave this warrior a spear and shield to protect himself. The other poses would be a Tomahawk & Shield or Spear & knife.

Here is one of my favorite poses in this set. This warrior is running and shooting the bow. His face reminds me of Wes Studi a little.

wes-studi

This pose is unique and my least favorite pose. Only because I can not re-use this pose easily. I will try to convert these figures first one day…

Paragon Indians14

Paragon Indians15

Here is another nice pose. This warrior has a carbine.

Paragon Indians7

Paragon Indians7a

Here are the two mounted poses. They are both very nice. The are mounted on TSSD horses.

Paragon Indians8aParagon Indians9

I like this pose. It can be used in many different scenarios. A classic pose. I like the touch of having a quiver and bow on his back too. The figure can also be pushed so he is resting on the mane of the horse. These figures rest nicely on the horse’s back and you don’t have to be worried about them failing off easily.

Paragon Indians10

I like this pose too. This is a realistic pose of getting close and have better odds of hitting someone after you shot the rifle. Plus doing more damage.

Paragon Indians Attack A

Here are the Paragon Sioux Indians raiding a TSSD Plains Indian camp.

Paragon Indians Attack3Paragon Indians Attack4Paragon Indians Attack5Paragon Indians Attack6

The Paragon and TSSD Indians are a perfect match. I am glad that they use the same brand horses. I like the Paragon plastic better than the TSSD. They are less rubbery than the TSSD and it is easier to straightening the bent weapons using he hot/cold water treatment.

Pope Indian1Pope Indian2

This blue Indian was made by Jason Pope of Plastic Underground.

Viking Staples

Before I wrap up this latest installment I have one more item to show. This is a vintage staple box that my girlfriend got me. I love the art work. It will look nice in a display with some figures one day. Thanks for reading and enjoy the 4th of July holiday.

Midwest Toy Soldier Show 2018 Review

Show2

About a month ago, I decided that I was going to the Midwest Toy Soldier Show. I am glad I did. The show was in Lafayette, Indiana. It is about 11 hours away from my house. Me and my girlfriend made this a weekend get a way. Besides going to the show, we visited some antique shows in Indiana and along the way.

The main reason I went was because I wanted to meet Ron Barzso and get some of his sets. I was looking for the new old stock figures that are cast in a new material. I am a big collector of Barzso Playsets and I have  purchased 6 of his playsets & 100’s of figures over the years. The good news is that I found the sets I was looking for. The bad news is Ron will soon retire.

He and Ken from LOD are releasing “Yorktown Playset”. “Battle of Yorktown, Attack on the Redoubt # 10”. This will be Ron’s last playset and it is limited to 100 sets being made. I am glad that I went to the show, I was the first to pre-order a set. They will be taking 50 pre-orders of the set and then selling the rest at the show. Also Ken is having a Great Promotion with a chance to win a “Yorktown Playset”. If you pre-order 4 of the new Revolutionary sets, you get a 5th set free and an entry into a drawing for a free Barzso Yorktown Playset to be released this fall. Sounds like a Great deal to me!!! You can read more about the promotion over here at LOD Revolutionary War Pre-Sale (Buy 4 Sets Get 1 Free)

Toys

I purchased a bunch of the new old Barzso sets, some old Airfix bagged sets and boxed sets, bagged Conte sets, Marx German Motorcycle figures and a mix of different loose figures.

Show18

The show was smaller than most of the other shows that I have been too, but it was a quality show. It was a plastic toy soldiers dream come true. There were a few small children that were amazed by all the marvels to be found. I had a great time. I spent about an hour shopping and another 3 hours talking to different people. There were a bunch of dealers that just sell at the shows. There were plenty of boxes to rumble through to search for that missing figure that you have been looking for. Loads of vintage plastic figures, plus new plastic sets being sold.

Eber1

The first dealer I saw was Rick Eber with his Vintage Marx figures and playsets. He always has plenty of vintage toys. Visit Rick’s website for more information Rick Eber’s Marx Playsets.

Todd Nace had a nice setup of vintage plastic figures, vintage painted metal figures and some playsets.

Gary1

Gary

Me and my girlfriend(Carolyn) spent some time talking to Gary & Susan Wendeln. Very nice people and helpful. They had a lot of vintage plastic figures and playset too. I purchased some bagged sets of Airfix from them.

Whelen1

Another vendor that was there was Doug Whelen. I spent some time talking to him, he is a really nice guy. Doug is a Veteran and a retired Police Officer. Right now he is unemployed and was selling off some of his collection. Some of his offerings were Marx Ben Hur Playset, Marx Ben Hur figures, 6 inch Marx figures, CTS Alamo set, Heritage Alamo set and a Marx Zorro set. Plus some other toys. You can reach him at 276-920-2899.

Sterling1Sterling2

Kole Sterling was another nice guy that had vintage plastic playsets and figures for sale.

Barzso5

If you are looking for Barzso figures you have to come to one of the shows that Ron attends. At the show he was selling some of the older sets for $25.00 and the new old sets for $22.00. He also had some of his foam pieces too. Loose figures were $2.00 a piece. Plus some character figures at different prices. I got Long John Silver for $10.00. I revisited his table a few times, adding  a few  more sets each time I stopped by to talk. Me and my girlfriend had a good time talking to Ron and his wife Mary Ann.

JimClouse1

Jim Clouse of BattleBoards USA was another person that I had looked forward to meeting and talking too. He creates the foam pieces for Barzso playsets and now LOD. Besides that, his custom made terrain pieces are great. I will have to get some for a few of the playsets that I have. His work is a piece of art to me, it’s really amazing to see.

EdBorris4

Kutnick

While I am talking about amazing work, Ed Borris custom figures are Great. He takes existing figures and then through different techniques he changes the poses. Sometimes by he heats up the arms and legs to change the pose. Other times he cuts figures up and then attaches them to new bodies, heads, arms, legs or different weapons to create a new custom figure. He uses metal pins to ensure that you figure is solid. Fantastic quality in each figure. Mike Kutnick was with Ed and they had some vintage sets and figures for sale too.

Amody1

Paul & Donna Amody had some highly detailed painted metal figures for sale. Truly their figures are a piece of art. You can email them at handheldwarriors@gmail.com.

Battleguard Ready1

I was glad to meet and talk to the new owners of the New Hope Design metal casted 54mm metal kits toy soldiers. Frank & Ellen Nefzger of Battleguard Ready! had sale on the sets at the show for $15.00. These castings are really nice. I am glad that they are making the figures here in the USA now.

Battleguard Ready! Facebook page

Bill Richardson had a nice display of vintage toys.

Dearthco1

Besides the toys, there was some nice artwork by Doug Dearth.

Joe Hail2

Joe Hail had some nicely painted figures for sale. He also has a painting service. If you can’t or don’t have the time to paint you own figures.

Michigan

Rick Berry of Michigan Toy Soldier was there too. I didn’t get a good picture of his table. I am using one of his pictures from the show. He was selling a lot of new plastic figures like Plastic Platoon Vietnam figures and X-Force toy soldiers.

Stengel1

John Stengel Jr also known as the Marx-Man and owner of Action Castings had plenty of vintage plastic figures too. I picked up some loose Conte, Barzso and TSSD figures from him. I talked to him for a while about what is going on with his figures. He said that there are some delays and he should have American Civil War marching figures and WWII German paratroopers for September at the Chicago show.

Toymiester2

Daniel McLean of Toymiester had some nice vintage plastic figures and Tin buildings.

TrainsTS1

Robert Way of Trains and Toy Soldiers had plenty of Conte figures at great prices. He also had some exclusive display items too. I purchased 2 Conte German sets and 1 Viking Set from them. He was very helpful.  Check out their website they have plenty of items for sale.

“Trains and Toys Soldiers is a family owned and operated business in the heart of the USA.  What started as a model railroading hobby has turned into a fast growing online business specializing in model trains, toy soldiers, and die-cast collectibles.  We have also added a line of children’s wooden railway toys, model kits and tools.  Our mission is to provide our customers with quality items at a reasonable price and great customer service.”

Turner1

Turner3

Francis Turner of Marx Toy Connection had his vintage Marx figures and toys at the show. I got two of the German Motorcycle figures from him. He is offering a chance to “Pick” his Marx Museum.

WBritain1

William Britain was one of the only vendors selling painted metal figures at the show. I joined the Collectors Club again, they are the only company of painted metal figures that I do collect at the moment. I wonder who won the prize?

Well that’s it folks. It was a wonderful show and at the end of the day I left happy. It was nice to talk to fellow collectors. I also visited some antique stores and found a few things. My girlfriend was happy to find some nice Pyrex bowls to add to her collection. I crossed one thing off my bucket list by meeting Ron Barzso. Next will be going to the Chicago Toy Soldier Show.

Book

The next show that I am planning to go to is the Gettysburg Toy Soldier Show. You can read more on that in a blog article that I did a few weeks ago, Gettysburg Toy Soldier Show 2018.

Toy Soldier Preview ~ LOD Enterprises Barzso Playsets Revolutionary War Infantry Sets

Last week Ken Ciak of LOD Enterprises Toy Soldiers shared with us some pictures of the prototypes of the new American Revolution Infantry sets. This is a joint venture with Barzso Playsets. There are 4 new sets that will be released later this year. The sets include British Regulars, British Light Infantry, American Regulars and American Light Infantry. Each set will include 8 different poses. The figures will be the same scale as the earlier sets of Colonial Militia and British Grenadiers that were done by Barzso and now produced by LOD.

Click on the pictures above to get a closer look at the pictures. Below are some pictures of the prototypes and figures from the older British Grenadiers & American Colonial Militia sets.

The color of the British Regulars set will be the same as the British Grenadier set. The color of the American Regulars set will be the same as the Colonial Militia set.

The British Light Infantry set is a nice surprise. The action poses are really good too.

Queen's Rangers

With some customizing we can have some Queen’s Rangers.

The American Regulars looks really good too. Looks like they are ready to assault the redoubts at Yorktown.

Light Infantry 4th Mass

Rev7

Lastly the American Light Infantry is filled with action too.

Rev9

These sets will be make a fine addition to the earlier Revolutionary sets. There should be a Yorktown playset later this year. And so far by the looks of it, it should be epic. When you combine the new sets with the older sets you will start will over 45 different poses to go with the future Barzso/LOD Yorktown playset. And for those of us that can customize figures, we have a lot to work with to create new poses.

On a different note, Hat is still having the crowdfunding for SYW Austrians and they would make great Hessian Musketeers for the British Army.  Musketeer, Hessian Regiment Von Bose, Yorktown 1781

Latest News!! First Look at Barzso Re-issued Woodland Indians

Well it has been a busy week so far and the Big Show has not even started. Here is the first look at Barzso Playsets re-issued Woodland Indians. I have to say they look amazing, it seems like more of the details are brought out with the new process of casting. I heard that the material is more like plastic and not like resin. I can’t wait to get my hands on some of these. Here are some of the pictures that Jim Clouse had posted. These figures should be available at the Chicago Toy Soldier Show and soon after on his website.

I cropped the pictures and then enlarged them to get a better look. These new figures look some much better, maybe it’s the gray? I need a few dozen of these to add to my collection. I can’t wait to see the other figures that he is going to re-issued too. Now I wish I was going to Chicago 🙁

The Latest News

confederat-casualties(L)

Hi guys, I just got some information about Barzso Playsets. According to Jim Clouse, Ron plans to produce some of his old sets. If they sell well, Ron plans to produce some new sets next year.

Hi All,

Some big news coming from Barzso Playsets. While Ron has been quiet the past year or two, he’s still been busy.

Ron has been looking for a better formulation of plastic resin to run figures in – – and has found it! The company that runs the figures are on board and have produced a selection of Ron’s previous figures.

The new material is more durable than the original resin, figures come out of the mold with straight weapons, etc. I have some of the early mold shots, and I even went to the length of dropping a firing guy on my concrete basement floor – no damage! Paint also adheres very well to the figures.

Here is a list of the figures that are available in the new material:

Pirates – Powder Blue

Confederate Casualties – Gray

Woodland Indians – Gray

Union Casualties – Powder Blue

Civil War Camp Poses – Powder Blue

Barbary Coast Pirates – Gray

1805 US Marines – Powder Blue

Lewis and Clark Character Figures – Powder Blue

Due to the higher cost of the material being used, prices will be $20 for eight figures (single poses, no duplicates). Ron said depending on collectors’ reception of these figures, he plans on making new figures for 2018.

Figures will be available at the Chicago Show this week, and will be added to the website soon after.

Best regards,

Jim

Looks like some more Great News before the big show starts. I hope to hear more 🙂

WTF? New finds, The Workshop, News on Barzso, Publius, and W. Britain for May 2017

Hi everyone, this month I am starting something new and hope to do this every month. It’s my WTF, lol. This new feature will focus on any news, new things I found or updates on projects that I am working on.

The Find

Here are some of the things I found on eBay and a few different places that I went to like garage sales, flea markets, thrift stores, and some antique stores.

Sheet Music

I also collect old sheet music, mainly the military themed sheet music. Here is an old E.T. Paull piece that I got for $5.

Here is some metal painted medieval figures that I got on ebay for about $50. I think they are from Russia. They are painted really nice and go well with my Conte and W. Britain medieval figures.

Here are some Britain Robin Hood figures that I picked up for about $15.

Here is a lot of old toy soldiers that I got for about $10, most of it broken parts or figures that are missing something.

The Workshop

From The Workshop, here are some things that I am working on. I had some time off and started painting again, some Conte and Publius figures. I am going to send most of the summer painting figures and not picking up too many things. Also I am going to start crafting some new items, I just got to think of what I want to make for both the miniatures and Playmobil. I still have a cottage to finish, some vikings ships that need to be customized for the miniatures and Playmobil. Ugh……..

Painting

I trying a new way to paint my figures, so far so good. I primed the figures black, and then started the flesh areas. Next the uniforms or clothing. I always try something different to see if I can do better with my painting. I hope to have this guys finish by the end of June. I am working with 4 base colors for the clothing with this batch. I am trying new ways to speed up the process, so far I spent a couple hours painting these over different days.

The Latest News

Here is some news this month about the hobby. What is going on with Barzso?? I noticed this other day on the Barzso website.

Barzso

There have been rumors about Barzso Playsets shutting down the past couple of years. I still hope they stay around, in some form. It’s a sad day, we shall see….

Here are some new figures from Publius, they go for around $99 for 12 figures. “The Battle of Kulikovo 1380 ” (Russian Knights vs. Golden Horde) 1\32 scale. They are really nice, but I will skip this batch. It is just to much money, and it is not a die hard piece that I need.

Here are some of the latest figures from the Wrath of the Northmen series from W. Britain. I will be getting these figures for my collection. I have most of the Saxons and some of the Vikings from this series. I will stick to this line of paint metal figures. For the price and the way they look, they are my favorite. One day I will do a post on this series.

Shield Wall1

ShieldWall

Well that is it for now, I wrap it up with this picture of a shieldwall. One day I will make a custom figure or more likely some type of Franken-figure of different parts of figures to make a new one.

In other news, I will have a few pictures of Replicants Saxons and there new Comanches. Plus some pictures of some old Atlantic figures that I had picked up lately.

And whatever I find in my basement, lol. The other day I started re-organizing my “stuff”, I am going through things and trying to make some room for new shelves so I have everything organized. I started finding things that I forgot I had or every purchased, lol. Some things I will get rid of, since I had to start downsizing a little. Anyway, I am starting to babble. Be well, and thanks for reading.

Toy Soldier Review ~ Barzso Duke’s Stronghold

Well I finally got to opening and setting up a little display with the New Barzso building, The Duke’s Stronghold. Let me say, I was a little surprised on how big this tower is. Also I should have know, since it came in two boxes. And as always, this item was packed really well and arrived undamaged. Plus as a nice touch, a personal message on thanking me on the purchase. I never had a problem ordering from Barzso Playsets. Barzso Duke’s Stronghold

This stronghold as pictured above measures about 32 inches tall, 20 inches wide and 16 inches deep. You can purchase this set as pictured above or in parts, like the Stronghold tower, small tower or the base.

One day, I will include this tower in mega display that I am going to create. But that will be many years from now, when I retire and move. Right now I am gathering pieces and sets to add. But between the painting and learning how to build other terrain pieces, It will take me time to finish.

I am glad that Barzso made this set, it is a great stand alone piece or it can be incorporated into their Castle to expand that set.

This tower comes alive when you add some figures to it. Here are some of my Conte, Barzso, Replicants and other figures.

I just saw this today, Great news for Medieval Toy Soldier fans. LOD has acquired the rights of Barzso molds for the Robin Hood’s Merry Men and the Sheriff’s Men toy soldiers. These figures can be used as Saxons and Normans. The archers are some of my favorite poses for plastic medieval figures. You can get these sets now for $22.50, for a pack of 16 figures.  To read more follow the link LOD Robin Hood’s Merry Men and the Sheriff’s Men.
