Toy Soldier Preview ~ W. Britain Wrath of The Northmen Summer 2017

Greetings everyone, it is almost summer time and soon W. Britain will be releasing new figures. Right now I am only collecting figures from the “Wrath of the Northmen” line of figures. I wish I could add some of the other lines to my collection, but due my budget I can only stick to one at this time. Anyway, I would like to share some information that I have gathered through different sources about the new figures that will be released soon. I can’t wait to add these figures to my collection and to see what else is going to come in the range down the line. Their figures keep getting better with each new batch released. So far the Saxons are my favorite, but it these new Vikings are making it harder to choose. W. Britain Wrath of the Northmen

This picture of a Viking holding the Raven Banner just came out today on their facebook page, it is supposed to be available in the summer too.

I am curious to see if any scenic pieces will be released this year for this theme. I would like to see some new cottages and maybe some villagers. Well that is a wrap for now, I am gathering some more things for the next installment for my monthly report.

WTF? New finds, The Workshop, News on Barzso, Publius, and W. Britain for May 2017

Hi everyone, this month I am starting something new and hope to do this every month. It’s my WTF, lol. This new feature will focus on any news, new things I found or updates on projects that I am working on.

The Find

Here are some of the things I found on eBay and a few different places that I went to like garage sales, flea markets, thrift stores, and some antique stores.

Sheet Music

I also collect old sheet music, mainly the military themed sheet music. Here is an old E.T. Paull piece that I got for $5.

Here is some metal painted medieval figures that I got on ebay for about $50. I think they are from Russia. They are painted really nice and go well with my Conte and W. Britain medieval figures.

Here are some Britain Robin Hood figures that I picked up for about $15.

Here is a lot of old toy soldiers that I got for about $10, most of it broken parts or figures that are missing something.

The Workshop

From The Workshop, here are some things that I am working on. I had some time off and started painting again, some Conte and Publius figures. I am going to send most of the summer painting figures and not picking up too many things. Also I am going to start crafting some new items, I just got to think of what I want to make for both the miniatures and Playmobil. I still have a cottage to finish, some vikings ships that need to be customized for the miniatures and Playmobil. Ugh……..

Painting

I trying a new way to paint my figures, so far so good. I primed the figures black, and then started the flesh areas. Next the uniforms or clothing. I always try something different to see if I can do better with my painting. I hope to have this guys finish by the end of June. I am working with 4 base colors for the clothing with this batch. I am trying new ways to speed up the process, so far I spent a couple hours painting these over different days.

The Latest News

Here is some news this month about the hobby. What is going on with Barzso?? I noticed this other day on the Barzso website.

Barzso

There have been rumors about Barzso Playsets shutting down the past couple of years. I still hope they stay around, in some form. It’s a sad day, we shall see….

Here are some new figures from Publius, they go for around $99 for 12 figures. “The Battle of Kulikovo 1380 ” (Russian Knights vs. Golden Horde) 1\32 scale. They are really nice, but I will skip this batch. It is just to much money, and it is not a die hard piece that I need.

Here are some of the latest figures from the Wrath of the Northmen series from W. Britain. I will be getting these figures for my collection. I have most of the Saxons and some of the Vikings from this series. I will stick to this line of paint metal figures. For the price and the way they look, they are my favorite. One day I will do a post on this series.

Shield Wall1

ShieldWall

Well that is it for now, I wrap it up with this picture of a shieldwall. One day I will make a custom figure or more likely some type of Franken-figure of different parts of figures to make a new one.

In other news, I will have a few pictures of Replicants Saxons and there new Comanches. Plus some pictures of some old Atlantic figures that I had picked up lately.

And whatever I find in my basement, lol. The other day I started re-organizing my “stuff”, I am going through things and trying to make some room for new shelves so I have everything organized. I started finding things that I forgot I had or every purchased, lol. Some things I will get rid of, since I had to start downsizing a little. Anyway, I am starting to babble. Be well, and thanks for reading.

Toy Soldier Review ~ Barzso Duke’s Stronghold

Well I finally got to opening and setting up a little display with the New Barzso building, The Duke’s Stronghold. Let me say, I was a little surprised on how big this tower is. Also I should have know, since it came in two boxes. And as always, this item was packed really well and arrived undamaged. Plus as a nice touch, a personal message on thanking me on the purchase. I never had a problem ordering from Barzso Playsets. Barzso Duke’s Stronghold

This stronghold as pictured above measures about 32 inches tall, 20 inches wide and 16 inches deep. You can purchase this set as pictured above or in parts, like the Stronghold tower, small tower or the base.

One day, I will include this tower in mega display that I am going to create. But that will be many years from now, when I retire and move. Right now I am gathering pieces and sets to add. But between the painting and learning how to build other terrain pieces, It will take me time to finish.

I am glad that Barzso made this set, it is a great stand alone piece or it can be incorporated into their Castle to expand that set.

This tower comes alive when you add some figures to it. Here are some of my Conte, Barzso, Replicants and other figures.

Toy Soldier Review ~ Engineer Basevich Early Slavs

Here is an update to this post as of 05/13/2017, I took a few pictures with the Barzso Duke’s Stronghold.

Early Slavs3

Hello again, a couple of weeks ago I got my Early Slav warriors made by Engineer Basevich. The detail in these figures is really nice and they go well with other brands that I collect.

The box art is great and there are plenty of different poses. I am going to use these figures as Vikings or Saxons.

Almost half of the figures can be used as villagers, which are hard to come by for a medieval collector. Plus with this set you have a woman in full armor, ready to kick arse.

Here are a few pictures of the Slavic warriors with a Conte Saxon and some Pvblivs Saxons figures. They are the right scale and mix well with both brands.

Here are some more pictures of mainly Conte Viking figures and the E B Slavs. The last picture is with a Barzso cottage.

All in all, I am very happy with the figures. I wish they were cheaper, as of now they are at collector prices. But if your a die hard collector like me, you need at least on set of these figures for your medieval collection.

I will have another post up this weekend, I am going to start a new monthly blog post on things that I have collected or what I am working on. I am going to slow down on collecting for a while and focus on creating, painting and reorganizing my collections of Toy Soldiers and Playmobil(yes I have not forgotten those guys). I just started painting a bunch of Vikings, I am going to have a tutorial on that down the line too. Thanks for reading, take care for now.

Toy Soldier Review ~ Kreza Modellbau Vikings

The other day while searching ebay for some Viking figures, I came across these figures from Kreza Modellbau. I never heard of this company and after a search on google I found their website. The company is from Germany and sells many different figures. The site sells mainly Medieval figures, I guess that about 75mm? They have a Elastolin section of figures and section of Kreza figures. So after a looking through there site, I came across what I was looking for. The Viking oarsmen, not to many companies made viking figures to use as rowers. You would think there would be more figures made to go with Viking ships, but that is a whole post on its own.

Even though I collect figures about 1/30 in scale, I figured that these Kreza figures would be close enough. So after a contacted them by email and ordering 8 figures, they arrived safely. I ordered 4 different poses, 2 of each pose either rowing from the left or right. The ironic part of this story is, the day after I had ordered these figures I found some resin Conte oarsmen for auction on eBay. Here is a comparison of 2 Conte oarsmen, with the Kreza figure in the middle. I have a ship that I am working on, it is like the Conte Viking ship that is made out of wood. I am going to add some of my Kreza figures with the Conte figures. The way I think, is you would have your biggest men as rowers. So here are a few that are a little bigger than a normal man. Plus maybe in the future I can use some of these figures for customizing. Most of the figures are in resin or metal, the resin figures that I got, where around $20.00 a piece. Thanks for reading.

You can go here to find the oarsmen Elite Wikinger. They are very helpful and easily to deal with.

Toy Soldier Preview ~ W. Britain Saxon Archers

Greetings again my friends, Thanks for stopping by. As the holidays approach us, I am taking a break from working on most of my projects. I am re-organizing my storage space and display area, and I shall start working on my projects next year. Right now I am going to pick up a few things here and there and plan for the future. Anyway, I have an update on some of the latest W. Britain Saxon figures today. Here are some of the Saxon archers that should be out in December. I can’t wait until next year to see what they have planned for the medieval range.

The Medieval Toy Soldier Project

Hi again everyone, I am making this post about the Medieval Toy Soldier dioramas that I am working on. I wanted to make this post to help other people out that might be thinking about do the same thing. I am new to dioramas with toy soldiers, I have done things in the past with Playmobil. Working with Playmobil is a little easier. Anyway let me show different things you can get to build up an Medieval world. First there are a few different companies out there that have made plastic medieval figures over the years and I could spent hours just posting pictures and talking about this. But I am only going to talk about what I think are the best figures out there right now that will go with the new W. Britain, First Legion and the older Conte painted metal figures.  In the future I post more about each group that I am using, and today I will give a brief outline.

The first question that I see collectors talk about is Scale!!!! Are these bigger than those??? This can be a little tricky at times, some times you will have a figure that is bigger for some reason that the rest of the line is about the same. Anyway, for the most part the painted metal figures from Conte, W. Britain and First Legion look nice together. First Legion detail is the best in my option, that said it would be a personal choice to included these figures with and other brands.

scales4

As for the plastic figures, Conte I think made some of the best Vikings, Saxons and Normans ever made. Barzso has some nice sculpts too with the Merry Men and Sheriff’s Men. Also I like the old Dulcop figures, I am going to get more of these and most likely convert them. But they fit in nicely with the other plastic figures that I am going to use. I also got lucky the other day of eBay, I picked up some TSSD barbarians that included a Conte Viking that I had missing from my collection. It was the guy swinging an axe over his head. The TSSD figures are large in my option, but I will add a few of these as Vikings or Saxons. I will not get any more of these for this project, most of them don’t really fit and I will have to convert some to make them fit. But an extra pose might make it worth it. And Lastly are the Russian made Pvblivs figures, they are expensive. But they look really nice, so I might be tempted to get some more if they make any new figures in the future.

scales1

Talking about cost, everything these days is expensive!!!!! From unpainted plastic to painted metal figures. If your lucky you can get a set of 14 to 16 Conte Viking or Norman plastic figures on eBay for around $15.00. If you want Conte Saxons, you would be lucky first to find any and I don’t want to even tell you about the cost. The later sets of Conte Vikings and Normans are expensive too. I was lucky enough to pick up a collection Conte Saxons, Vikings and Normans for a fair price. I wish I would have picked these up years ago. Barzso figures are also hard to find and can be expensive too. I like Barzso figures, but some of the Merry Men are a little bulky. I have a few of the Barzso Norman figures. I will try to convert the Barzso figures that I have, maybe add different weapons, shields and helmets to them.

scales2

Talking about Barzso, I think the archers that are in the Merry Men set are excellent. They fit in nicely with the Conte figures. Also the Dulcop archer is nice, you just have to twist the head so he is looking at what he is shooting at!!!!!

scales5

Talking about changing or converting figures, that’s one thing that I will be working on in the future. Once you have a 2 or 3 figures, depending on the poses there is so much that you can do to make them look different with a painting scheme. So what I will “try” to do next is add some small details to figures. Maybe using some putty to make a beard, add a shield, change the direction of the arms or by adding some other things. The bigger conversions will be cutting up figures to make new poses, or cutting off weapons to have them using a different weapons, or replacing heads or add a different arm. So much to do!!!!!

scales4a

Now that you have seen some painted metal figures and plastic figures together you can see the difference in scale and detail. In a few weeks, I should have most of these figures that I started painting a few weeks ago finished. I will then post some pictures showing my finished work compared against painted metal figures that were done from the companies. I think they will look good enough to blend in with the Conte and W. Britain figures. The First Legion figures will be tough, they have excellent paint jobs and great details too.

scales6

scales7

So here are the last of the comparison pictures of different figures, I will add a few more pictures of stock groups now.

Here are the Conte Vikings, Normans and Saxons. I will list some sets, some of these sets could be different with poses when you find them, but for the most part this is what you will find. I will one day take pictures of the figures that I have and do a separate posts on Conte medieval plastic figures. So sorry in advance with some of these pictures and the amount of detail. Also some of same the Vikings, Saxons and Norman figures are used in different sets as either Vikings, Saxons or Normans. You can mix of some of the figures into different armies for more poses.

Conte Vikings

Conte Normans

conte-normans-set-1conte-normans-set-2conte-normans

Conte Saxons

So here are most of the plastic figures done by Conte, they have to be the best plastic figures out there or one of the best. There are some other poses in rare sets or that came in playsets that Conte has done over the years. Hopefully one day they will be recast by Conte again, so they will be easier to find and cheaper. And if they ever are done again, by as many as you can get. They won’t last long in stock.

Barzso Saxons and Normans. I say this, because basically that what they were. The outlaws of Robin Hood, were mainly Saxons. And the Sheriff’s men were mainly Normans soldiers.

barzso-normansbarzso-robin-hood

Here are the Russian made Pvblivs figures that you can get for about $50.00 a set. They are expensive, but they are sculpted really nice. The last two sets are the best in my option.

vikings1avikings2avikings3a

The last plastic figures that I will use, and will have to convert to use are Dulcop Robin Hood Merry Men and their Normans. They are ok, I like the archer figure. So I will find another set of these to convert with different heads. And will have to convert the others, like the Normans. They need new weapons and shields.

dulcop1dulcop2dulcop3dulcop4

Ok, so what started as a simple post on talking about comparing different figures has grown into this. I will be posting some other articles over the next few months and next year about Viking Longships, my painted figures, and other playset items. The next few months and following year with be exciting for medieval collectors. Hopefully Conte will have new items and recast the older plastic figures, W. Britain talks about creating a Village. Will we see cottages, farmers, or who knows what?? I would like to see something that we can use to set up a village, the last one was by Conte. Too bad I missed that. Maybe somebody will make another Viking Longship? W. Britain and First Legion should be coming out with more figures next year. I think we shall see more Vikings, Saxons and Normans to add to our armies 🙂

I have to say this before I forget, but if you are not that good at painting and want some nice figures. Then W. Britain is the way to go, they have some great sculpted and painted metal figures that are priced fairly. Plus I think they are going to expand this range with scenic pieces. Also the new poses they are coming out this fall are really nice, they will make a scene pop out. Vikings and Saxons fought a lot in the Shieldwall formation and this is what I am going to try to do in one of the dioramas I am planning. The Britains have a bunch of figures in a shieldwall pose, plus do the Conte Saxons. I will try to do that in the future too, showing the different figures that I will use for this.

wrathwrath2wrath3wrath4wrath5wrath11wrath12wrath13

And lastly the First Legion Vikings, I wonder what else the will release next year.

vikingspreview2vikingspreview

So there it is, lol. Sorry that I kept rambling on. I thought I would never finish this post. So if you want just plastic, you can chose from the ones above. There are other brands out there, maybe you have one to add? Also most of the old Marx, Airfix and other brands are to small for me to include or too big for me to include. If you just want painted metal and don’t want to spend to much, go for the W. Britain figures and you can find some of the old Cone figures on eBay for a deal here and there. Thanks for reading and keep an eye out for future posts 🙂

Toy Soldiers Review ~ Publius Vikings

pvblivs-vikings

Last week I finally picked up some of the Russian made Publius Vikings. I got sets number 2 and 3. I missed out on the first set, because at the time I didn’t want to spend the money to get these. They cost about $50.00 for six figures, it is expensive. But then I started collecting different Viking figures after First Legion came out with the Viking Range. So I have been picking up First Legion Vikings, W. Britain Saxons, Conte Vikings, Saxons & Normans and Barzso Robin Hood Merry Men. Plus all kinds of other brands of medieval type figures. But more of this for future posts.

When I saw the Publius Viking Set #3 on eBay, I took the plunge and purchased that set and #2 set also. They are sculpted really good and go well with Conte, First Legion and W. Britain figures. I took a few pictures and found some stock pictures from around the net to post here. I will do another post either tomorrow or Saturday comparing the different figures that I am collecting and painting to show how well they go together. Thanks for reading 🙂

Toy Soldiers Review ~ Barzso Medieval Stone Cottages

Now that your waiting for the new Barzso Tower set to come out, I wanted to review some of their Medieval Stone Cottages from their Medieval Collection that came out over the past year. In one word, they are “Great”. They will fit with any Medieval scene that you want to do and could be used for other eras as well. I took a few pictures with some Barzso, Conte and Dulcop figures that are 54mm to 60mm in scale. I think the scales are the “Big” 54mm and more close to 60mm in scale. Anyway, they would look good with either scale. These cottages will help me with my latest project that I am working on. The larger cottage measures approximately 10 inches wide, 6 inches deep and 7 inches tall and goes for $39.99. The smaller cottage measures approximately 6 inches wide, 4 & 1/4 inches deep, and 5 inches tall and goes for $24.95. Ok, thanks for reading. They actually don’t look to bad with Playmobil too. I am going to touch up the doors and paint them brown.
